Help! Can I put an 03 D17y8 Vtec motor in my 01 DX with non vtec
Help! Can I put an 03 D17y8 Vtec motor in my 01 DX with non vtec
Just bought this car last month off some girl. The clutch is barely left and the engine is burning way to much oil. Also I really wish I had vtec. My buddy wants to sell me his vtec D17y8 with tranny and clutch and ecu chips. will this work in my car?

There's no such thing as a D17Y8, unless it's some sort of Frankenstein motor with a d17 block and a d16 head, which has been done, and, in that case, will just bolt in, and then you need a vtec ecu or a stand alone vtec controller. If the motor is a d16y8, then it's illegal to install it in your car.

I was told thats what the motor is Im guessing its just d17 with vtec. also I heard its not illegal to put a newer motor in an older car just illegal for vise versa. I'm leaning towards not doing this because I heard of 2 of my friends having to connect vtec to their fog lights. and switch it on whenever their fogs are on.

Vtec doesn't go to your fog lights. Do some searching. Plus, don't waste your money on a D17A2 (the vtec motor). Swap in a k20 or k24 and you can push 200 hp easy with the right engine. That's what I'm doing

Well, in case not a troll, a D17Y8, is basically a stroked d16Y8, which has been done, but, seeing as how it uses the d16 block, its an older engine than the car, and is illegal. If its a d17 with vtec (d17a2) then everything just bolts in, minus the vtech controller...easiest way to fix that is get the vtec ecu and reflash your key....

If you swap the ecu to ex than make sure it's from a 01-03 so you don't have to change the engine wire harness. If you get a 04-05 ex ecu you will need to get wide band o2 sensors as well
