recommended engine swap for 2001 Ex

I know a little bit bout mechanics, and I'm taking some classes to maybe choose as a career, but I'm still a newbie.
My engine is leaking by the oil pan & the bolts that hold motor down. I figure why repair an old 110K motor, instead get a newer one.
It's a project car that I want to fully deck out; inside & out.
So what are some good motor models as far as performance compared to around a $5,000 budget?

You could swap in a k20a3 for $5000, thats the only engine swap that fits in your budget and you'd need to do all the labour yourself or it would be closer to $6000.

Neither are slow, but thats beside the point.

The k20z3 is a better motor, but it's much more expensive.

Re: recommended engine swap for 2001 Ex

Here's a basic idea of what you need to do the swap, http://xproductionz.com/k20swap/k20swap.html

Head swaps start to get complicated. Many people swap a k20a2 head onto the k20a3 block, then upgrade the rods and add hondata to make it run right.

k20a3 motor doesnt have real vtec. it was made to be a gas saver. vtec kicks in at 2200 rpm with that motor. and k20z3 is alright but getting a k20a2 is a better motor to get just cause its cheaper and puts around the same power down.

k20a3 can be made to match the k20a2 or k20z3 easily, it just takes a head swap and some tuning.

I rather buy a $500 k20a3 and put $2000 worth of mods into it, than spend $2500 on a k20a2.
