Plan on Turbo D17A1

If I where to buy a turbo kit or piece on together, I think I could run 8 psi. If I bought an aftermarket headgasket could I run 10 psi? or higher? If i Wanted to run like 12 or 15 what else would I have to do to the block. I dont need over 300hp just maybe 200 somethin. I dont have any money yet, but when I turn 16 and get a job Im gonna put it into my car. What do I need to do to get a decently powerful car? Im not into swapping a K-series, and I dont want to put 10grand into a D17. So any opinions? I would be doing almost all of the work myself, so something not TOO hard.

First thing you need is Hondata.

Re: Plan on Turbo D17A1

You could, but you would be better off going with Hondata, because with the piggy back systems you won't be able to extract the maximum power out of turbo set-up. Its better to spend more on your EMS and less on your other parts.

Learn your car and how it reacts before even thinking on putting a turbo. apologies if you are more experienced (rare cases apply).

I meant to say i know some guys that run SCCA since they are kids, if not the case, you won't be able to tame even the stock power in the course.

Re: Plan on Turbo D17A1

I have to agree with Sdaidoji, your an inexperienced driver, so going turbo is not a good idea. I know that criticism is tough to accept, but high performance cars in the hands of inexperienced drivers have taken many lives. Including at least five people I went to high school with.

Why not focus on brakes and suspension, its rarely about raw power anyway and you can do those things much more gradually and without having to shell out for hondata.

Re: Plan on Turbo D17A1

dammit, I had a whole thing typed up and accidentally hit F5.. gah dammit..

here's the cliff's notes:
-Key to a successful turbo is a proper tune
-Piggyback could be good, but won't yield results as good as a standalone can
-I tried turboing my D17A2 with a piggyback (VAFC-II) and it didn't turn out well. And that was even at the recommendation of a tuning shop.
-Spend more money up front to do it proper, you'll spend less in the long run
-Since you're only 15, save your money and do it right (refer to previous statement)
-I have a Garrett T3 Super 60 turbocharger sitting in my room, mocking me. That's how I know what I know.

**** I was looking up after I accidentally pushed F5:
If I had $10,000, I really could make a pretty decent setup. I got all the prices from Dezod.com, and gave a high estimate for **** I couldn't find. Even then, I estimated (almost) everything high. Here's what I wrote down:
Hondata k-pro: $1000
k-series ECU: $300 (found a lot on ebay for that price)
Garrett GT3076R (the badass turbo I want): $1275
Approximate tuning costs: $300 (assuming 3 hours at $100/hr, my VAFC-II Tune only took maybe an hour or 2)
440cc inectors: $300
Walbro 255LPH pump: $100
A badass turbo manifold (yes, I know you can get them cheaper, but notice the "badass" part): $1000
Extra **** (piping, IC, hoses, excess costs, etc): $2000
DEFI Racer boost gauge: $200
AEM Wideband A/F Gauge/sensor: $200
aftermarket clutch/lightweight flywheel: $500
Crower stage 3 cam/valvesprings/retainers: $660
Koyo Radiator: $350
Crower Rods: $740
Wiseco 8.8:1 Pistons: $530
ARP Headstuds: $125
______________________________
Grand total: $9580

Notice I started throwing random **** in there that you don't necessarily need, but wouldn't be bad to have. That said, Give us an actual price limit.. lol

Re: Plan on Turbo D17A1

actually, i would say to check for street survival schools, they are all over us.
worth every penny
then go to an autoX and get literally wiped out to understand that your driving is actually not as good as you thought. get beaten by completely stock saturns (that's me )
then learn how to really drive (that helps a lot, i take my cars to autoX everytime i change the car so i will be able to test and know its actual limits and behaviour)
then start dreaming
I only mod my car when i actually start to overdrive the actual setup (and when i get a good co-driver, i find out that i was actually unable to bring the potential of the car )

Re: Plan on Turbo D17A1

I likes your write-up, I hates F5.

One other thing I'll mention about the importance of a good tune, which relies on a good EMS, is that an improperly tuned motor will eat itself. I don't remember how many motors Andy went through, I think 4 or 5 and he was still running relatively low numbers and PSI at that point.

Re: Plan on Turbo D17A1

this one just reminded me of a thing i have not said for a time.
there was this guy with his brand new at the time 06 civic.
he got beaten by me by 2 or 3 sec in a course of 70 sec? (can't remember the exact numbers).
He then asked me repeatedly what engine i have under the hood. I kept saying to him just suspension (a badly setup one, actually, that killed my transmission due to understeer.).
No matter what i said, he believed i had a turbo or something... Whatta joke! And i am just a mid-pack driver
first driving and maintenance. then suspension.
then think on engine power

I dont want to be rude, but I know that I dont have as much experience, maybe 10,000 miles?. that doesnt mean im not a good driver. Im pretty sure I have more knowledge than ur average joe of turbos, Ive worked on different cars and read books about them. As for my driving Ive driven turbo audi v8's and I used to have a F250(sold) and have driven many trucks and trailers and know how to park and all. Let me CLARIFY, I'm not turboing to race, just to make a fun cool car and have experience of turboing a car. Im not an idiot looking for something fast and be lik "dude i almost wrecked im so cool bro". I just want to make something that I can be proud of, ok?

Re: Plan on Turbo D17A1

since you said you read a lot, another good reading i recommend is GRM (grass roots motorsports) magazine if you have not read them yet - I like some of the collumns written by tim suddard, when he also talks about how he teachs his kids to survive in the streets.
PS: xRiceboyx already gave you good pointers to go turbo, but never forget the power is nothing without traction/control

I never turbo'd my car for racing, just to have fun. Still doesn't change the fact that you need a proper tune to not kill your engine with a turbo.

I appreciate ur replies and info. I didnt no how much autoX is but their isnt any within miles of where I live, just gravel and corn haha. And what I said, that was said jokingly, if u cant take that then maybe u need to grow up, no disrespect. Ive also said many times its not for racing, its for the purpose of soupin up and turbo'n a car.

So I cant just build the proper turbo and use AEM FIC? I have to have hondata for like 9-10psi?

Re: Plan on Turbo D17A1

no. just idealy for power and safety you'd want hondata. ps: it doesn't work on auto's if you have one...=( i do.

plus rice gave you some high end numbers to and they where all new. you can do a decent setup for cheaper then 10k.

shop on craigslist, no joke you'll find great deals if you wait for them.
craig'slist:
greddy turbocharger
bov
wastegate
emanage or aem piggyback
gauge

buy a quality good cast iron or machined steel header and oil return system from a local store.

ebay:
conecting pipes and ceramic corners, intercooler.

i'm not sure where or what injectors to run. i think someone said the acura rsx-s injectors are big enough for 8psi and bolt right in.

ps: you'll probabley have to but a turbo 3bar MAP sensor for the emanage or aem, seperatley plus the harness.

shop around. i got my rims on craig's for $300, and my megnaflow cat back in mint condition for $150. my emanage (not installed yet) for $300.

I guess I kinda worded that weird. I did specifically call out the VAFC-II for being terrible. Really, what I'm saying is, since you're starting out new, do it proper the first time. It really will save you money in the long run. You'll be able to make more safe power than you would with a piggyback. You can go piggyback if you really wanna, but if I were in your position, I'd save up for the k-pro.

This sounds like you'll have a lot of fun.. once you get older and know how to drive the car, let alone with 200+ HP under the hood.

Re: Plan on Turbo D17A1

to be honest, you should save your money and buy smaller mods if you like to modify your car. turbo is a big problem and you have to constantly be ready for stuff that breaks and have extra money to replace and fix parts. seems like when you are young and just starting a job, you want a reliable car to make some money. there is alot more to life than a car.
