I have a 2003 honda civic ex 5 speed and the honda mechanic says my engine is shot. They want 5-6 thousand to replace it. ouch!
I have searched this site for proper engine but no luck.
My question is this...what engine should I replace it with and what extra work will be needed for it to be problem free. My son wants a faster engine, but I am unsure as I want something that will not cost lots of money with lots of problems installing. I will be getting a mechanic to do the work.

Blew the engine in the last civic I had 500 miles from home (Memphis). Actually found an honest mechanic and he put in a 1.7L (the same engine you have) with 2000 miles on it for $3000. $1000 for the engine and $2000 for the labor. Guess what I'm saying is that quote is way to expensive.

Get another quote or go to http://www.car-part.com/, find a low mileage engine and have your local, trustworthy mechanic or one of these civic guys do the labor. Just keep in mind usually the mechanic won't warranty the work if you don't buy the part from him.

EDIT: OK, looks like an engine with super low miles is gonna run ya $1500 and the flag hrs are consistent with $2000 labor. looks like your paying twice for that engine.
