Turboing my D17A2...
Turboing my D17A2...
Ok so i am planning on putting a turbo on my ex, and i was planning on running about 8lbs just wanna keep it low for now. What do you guys recommend for a pretty inexpensive turbo kit, and a parts list? Are the ebay kits any good?? Is it important to do my bottom end at that psi?? And lastly, what tuning methods can be used? Is it possible to tune with afr gauge what are the ratios that i am looking for. Any info would be helpful.

gonna have to go with a custom name brand kit if you want any chance of having it fit. i think dezod.com still makes em for our cars. but to really do it right, you need to spend even more $$ on return fuel system, wideband o2 sensor, tuning, engine management, etc. so no, there is no cheap turbo solution. youre gonna need to spend at least $5k or more, prolly as much as a k20 motor swap.
Re: Turboing my D17A2...
Holy mis-information batman..
There are numerous used dezod kits for sale for under 2k (like mine) /shameless plug. At just 8 psi, the only engine work you need to do is ARP headstuds and a fresh headgasket. Not a terribly big deal. That is, if your block is in healthy condition before hand. K-pro is the engine management of choice, it's wonderful, there are many threads about it. I also had a good experience with AEM F/iC for over a year, but any higher than about 9 lbs and it has issues. You will definitely need a wideband, which takes your total to 2200-ish. As for your AFR question, you will need a dyno tune. A good tune is the single most important piece of a turbo build. It is crucial, you will destroy all of your hard work without it.

If you say the kit is 2 grand, K-pro is another grand that's 3 grand. How does what you say make any sense. That's not including tune and probably no injectors were with your kit either. To do it right your looking at $5 grand or better.
Re: Turboing my D17A2...
you can turbo your car for a lot cheaper then a k swap. make you own kit, buy a decent turbo and waswastegate and blowoff valve stay away from knock offs. yes you are goin to need a wideband as for momotor work you dont have to do any internals for 8lbs of boost, buy a set of srt4 injectors or rsx-s injectors, no need to upgrade your fuel pump unless you feel you want to. and a return fuel set up isnt neccissary until around 250 to 300 whp. arp head studs are a must to prevent head lift. and arp rod bolts are also good insurance. you could easily turbo your car for around 3000 dollars give or take a couple hundred. no need to get all crazy for a low boost set up
Re: Turboing my D17A2...
If you read, you would understand a little better. K-pro is superior, but not required. I'm asking 2100 for my kit, including F/iC, which has worked great for me, and will work fine for only 8lbs. I don't have injectors with it, which are less than 100.. so call it that. 2200, you have all the parts, I paid $300 for a tune from scratch on F/iC. I have since started to work in that same shop since I was a customer, and I can speak from experience, that if anyone is charging more than $300 for tuning F/iC, you need to find a different shop. So that's $2500, say another $100 for insurance, $100 for headstuds and $30 for a headgasket. That leaves you with $2700 and change, all said and done. Even including shipping charges, still less than 3k. That is about what it costs for k-swap parts, NOT including the engine and trans or k-pro.

Re: Turboing my D17A2...
not saying gearbox is wrong or anything but you can make one yourself.. i built one from scratch and spent only 1500 for everything.. I had name brand parts as well.. dezod kits are ok but there over priced in my opinion..
Re: Turboing my D17A2...
Ok ya that is what i figured it would cost to me to custom build it and i am already on my way there what did you use for intercooler piping that has been the hardest thing to find for me
Re: Turboing my D17A2...
I understand that it is not cheap to get completely set up for a turbo but that is not what i am worried about i just want the kit for a decent price and have it work and not have to worry about it failing on me
