Turbo Spool
Turbo Spool
ok so I got one for the panel. I noticed yesterday working on my car that @ idle the compressor wheel stopped spinning, completely. So I blipped the throttle & it came back......it doesn't always stop, but sometimes it will if you watch it long enough...
I've never had a turbo car before but the mechanics on a turbo & exhaust manifold say otherwise.....it is bolted directly to the exhaust ports, surely the flow from the engine never stops enough not to spin the turbine at least alittle.
Is this normal or is my 5027E Precision Turbine toast? I really love it. It spools great! Awesome turbo!

Re: Turbo Spool
It is fine. My turbo does the same thing at idle. I got freaked out too when I saw my turbo was doing that at idle. I am no turbo guru either, so I could be wrong and both our turbo's could be toast lol.

Re: Turbo Spool
Guys slow down here!!! The turbo is fine if it does not spin at idle. That means the turbo is a little large for the application. So long as it is making boost, there is no oil anywhere and the comp wheel still spins with no shaft play, you're fine.
Re: Turbo Spool
i dont get it tho...at idle..isnt air still coming in and out of the engine? so if the turbo is connected to the exhaust manifold..shouldnt the exhaust gases still be pushing past the turbine? there for making it spin??
oorrr
are the gases being pushed out at idle..not strong enough to move the turbine...?

Re: Turbo Spool
Its a matter of compressor size and pressure. If you've got a big turbo with a large interior volume, a D17 at idle will not create enough pressure to spin the turbine, it'll just flow past the blades without spinning them.
So you're close on your second guess, its just a little more involved than that.

Re: Turbo Spool
Thanks for clarifying dezod, I was gonna give Paul a buzz but I abuse him too much!! haha. Also another important note ** the turbine is also turned by the expansion of heat from the exhaust ports not the flow of exhaust by itself.**
