Post Pop Goes The Headgasket.

HELLO ALL,IF ANY ONE KNOWS ABOUT ME OR MY CAR,I POPPED A HEADGASKET . SO IM REPLACING THE HEADGASKET FROM A FACTORY TO A COMETIC .040 STANDARD BORE. ,INSTALLING A KOYO RACING RADIATOR 36MM FROM DEZOD . DEZOD ROCKS !!! AND INSTALLING A BLOCK GAURD.
THEN TURNING UP THE BOOST AND DRIVING TO BUFFALO FOR A RETUNE.

Q: FOR SOME PEOPLE HERE . HAS ANY ONE POPPED A FACTORY PLASTIC INTAKE MANIFOLD? AND WHAT KIND OF BOOST WILL IT HANDLE?

NEXT WHEN SHOULD I STOP UPPING THE BOOST ON FACTORY INTERNALS?
I HAVE DECKED THE HEAD .030 AND ARP HEAD STUDS INSTALLED .
IM AT 10 PSI TUNED AND RUNNING GREAT WITH E-MANAGE BLUE AND RSX
TYPE S INJECTORS. I THINK I POPPED THE HEAD GASKET BEFORE I GOT IT TUNED .

WELL THATS MY UPDATE . SAVING MONEY FOR PISTONS.RODS,SLEEVES AND A TURBO UPGRADE . THANKS ALL FOR READING.

Re: Pop Goes The Headgasket.

cutting the head .030 on 9:1-9.5:1 stock pistons with boost probably wasnt a good idea. that could be one reason for the blown headgasket. we dont see a lot of blown headgaskets at our dyno for lack of tuning, we see blown motors for that. i was going to cut my head .040 with a stage 2 cam and run on nitrous. doesnt leave a lot of room for errors though. now if your head is warped because of the blown headgasket youre screwed. not too much room to work with now.

you need to find the formula to calculate your compression ratio with the milled head. i have it at work and cant remember it. i bet youre somewhere between 10.5 and 11:1. and running 10 pounds untuned on it? lucky you didnt dynomite that little 1.7 into the next area code.

Re: Pop Goes The Headgasket.

With all the money you've spent why not get a KMS, Venom, or custom one. Or are you waiting for Dezod's when it's finished?

Re: Pop Goes The Headgasket.

The Headgasket Popped , But The Head Is Fine. Leak Cked.and
Cked For Worpage, all Is Fine. My Head Is Decked .030 And The
Gasket Is .040 Im Gaining Back .010 Of A Inch ,factory Gasket Is .027
And As Far As The Intake Manifold ,everyone Says They Think It Cracks A Such And Such Psi. Who Here Has Popped A Plastic Intake Manifold?
I Was Thinking Kms Or Fabtech . I Called Fabtech And Emailed Them .its Around 1,200.00 Dollars ,was Holding Out For Dezod If I Can. Im Tuned At 10 Psi With What I Have ,but I Popped The Head Gasket Before I Went To Get Tuned.so Know I Will Go Back And Get Tuned For 12-15 Psi With The New Radiator For Cooling Purposes And Lets See What Happens.

Im Very Curious To See If Any One Really Has Popped A Plastic Intake Manifold. Let Me Know.

Re: Pop Goes The Headgasket.

why are you using that thick *** gasket? honda oem gaskets are badass gaskets. i would switch back to a honda oem gasket, advance my cam timing 3 degrees, build the bottom end, get a badass tune, and be realistic with the boost controller.

Re: Pop Goes The Headgasket.

You will only break the headgasket if you are a complete moron.

Im on 24 psi of boost. Only part of my motor that is stock is the damn headgasket. Hell, my wastegate has a 1 bar spring in it. And I was commuting 180 miles back and forth from my home in Bakersfield to my parents house in Lancaster every weekend with this car.

and btw, for those of you who know me (perhaps as turboengnr or Catalyst) im just here for a wiring harness diagram, so dont pm me because i probably wont respond.

As a quick update, 24 psi of boost on 3 gallons of 91 octane and 6 gallons of C16, the car made 419 whp and 361 ft/lbs.

Re: Pop Goes The Headgasket.

I'm not sure what my head was shaved for my head warpage - if any. but switching to to 8.8:1 pistons means it will take more boost with less stress, right?

Boost pressure has nothing to do with cracking the IM.

speedfoos is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Pop Goes The Headgasket.

Then what does? It would stand to reason that more boost pressure you run, the larger the volume of air that's forced into the same area contained by a plastic intake mani, which would put greater stress on the IM, eventually causing it to crack. I have no personal experience here, just guessing though.

you'll crack it from a sudden change in pressure. air moving through it wont blow it to pieces, but a sudden pressurization with nowhere for air to go, will pop it.
It wouldnt just blow..... you'd heat it up and it would start stretching out, eventually you'd manage to burst through it in an unspectacular fashion, but I suspect it would take quite a while, its not just gonna go boom. It wont be like a nitrous backfire or something.

Honda gives you a .008" window to work with. Per the manual, if you warp it anymore than that, its a paperweight. Any reuptable shop will figure this out and tell you what you need done. It sounds like a small number, but thats a lot of metal to work with.
8.8:1 is safe even with a slight mill job. Honestly with todays fancy electronic controllers and stuff, almost anything is safe if you build it right.

where are you at now turboengnr ? you come up in some conversations at a local shop haha.

I have had a lot going on. I just finished taking 32 units at Cal State Bakersfield over the spring quarter in order to finish my Bachelors. I am now moving on to attempt to attain my PhD in Economics from Berkeley.

Ive been simply working on my car over the weekends and doing schoolwork on the week days. Only god knows how many different intake manifolds ive made. Suprisingly, I am using the stock one at the moment and the car is naturally aspirated due to a disagreement between me and my 60-1. I told it cigarettes were bad, but (like all children) it defied me and started smoking anyway.

So i am taking this opportunity to build yet another new setup. It took too much to make power with the remote mounted setup. And there was also the constant fear that my passengers side headlight would melt from the placement of the turbo. So i am in the process of building a new manifold. I have assembled my second motor and trans and put all the accessories on it, just so i had an accurate representation of my engine bay in order to build the new manifold.

These are the only recent pictures i have. The manifold would have been completed already, but i ran out of stainless weld-L's

Has a 37* merge collector, seam welded and ported inside. Fully made from 316 stainless, and 100% TIG welded. That damn POS MIG will never touch this manifold. I made the header flange by hand on my band saw and drill press, and ordered the T3 flange, wastegate flange, and downpipe flage from ATPturbo.com.

Like i said before, i am really really busy at this point. So i will not be responding much. Im simply updating because someone whom i added to my MSN a long while back has been bugging me constantly about posting. And no andy, im not talking about you
