Dumbest thing ever

Ok on the hot side of my t3 turbo the top part of one of the studs broke off, me being stupid i tried to use a lock wrench to get it out and ended up striping the broken stud. What should i do?

So the possibility of getting the stud out is out of the question?

go buy a reverse lockout kit, you drill into the broken stud a little and use this lockout tool by jaming it in there to back it out...read instructions on the kit and some heat is needed...or you could take it to a machine shop...**** liek that happens to turbos all the time

You'll probably have to get that thread hole retapped if you stripped it out also. The machine shop will be able to do all that for you.

if there is enough bolt showing too they can always weld a nut on the end of it and extract it that way

the stud is now deformed because of my stupidity and the original nut wouldn't fit. i was thinking about doing that, unless i could find a nut a little bigger and do it.

The exctractor kit will work but you'll have to be very carefull to keep away from the threads or they may strip.
If you never done it before just go to a machine shop the $60-80 they may charge you is nothing compare to ruining the whole part.

if you get a screw extractor kit you will be able to drill it out and use the extractor to remove the old bolt easily i've had to do with it with brakes and such due to breaking off the heads its not that hard to do and cheaper

He was playing with you don't take it personal.
I had trouble with a exhaust intale on my LX head, a stud broke inside I extracted it then replaced with another one it came lose then I used a helicoil then it came lose again, finnaly I was fet up with it, and now I took the head off to do an ARP exhaust stud kit using a machine shop.
Sometimes you count your loses and head on down the shop.

you may also need to heat the area around the stud with a tourch as you remove it

What kind of flange is it? If it is the ford 5-bolt type I would just forget about it. More than likely it won't leak, if it is a 4-bolt round there is a chance it will be okay with 3-bolts.
And then if it does leak, just cut the exhaust off abot 3 feet past the turbo, it will spool like made and you will never hear the leak

Later
Randy

heat will cause the metal to expand and losen the fit between the stud and the threads in the turbo was it?

causing the metal to expand would cause the bolt hole to shrink. just use a good penetrating oil, like liquid wrench.

it wont shrink the hole if you heat it. I am a welder, I do this stuff all the time. It does expand the hole. For what reason I dont know, theory wold suggest it would shrink it bt I assure you it doesnt. The heat cycles of the turbo probably froze it in there. If you took the car for a beat down run and then tried to take it off, or used a torch in the first place it most likely wouldnt have stripped or snapped. Food for though on the next time around. GL man!

Ive been a auto tech for 20 years using a torch on a almost daily basis for this type of thing and has worked EVERY time and has never made it harder to get out
