using a cam gear on a turbo car, a waste or a nescessity???
im turboing my car with tsi kit around 10psi with PnP ex head with stg 2 turbo cam. im using the emanage and i wanna get the best possible tune...... i was told that a cam gear would be a waste of money and its not needed to tune on a turbo car.............are these people retarded or correct?
wasnt the question.
let me put it this way, people were saying that adjusting valvetrain timing wouldnt make much of a difference worth bothering with the money on a turbo car. so im here asking the guys who tune turbo cars all the time or who know craploads about them if thats true or if i should get the cam gear cus it could help alot.

best spot for these cars seems to be at 0 degrees. spend the money elsewhere IMO. All you wind up doing is shifting the power up or down, it honestly seems to be a complete waist of time with a sohc turbo honda. Unless you are in full blown race only mode where money and dyno time is no option, spend the money on something else. my cam gear is set a 0 and next time around Ill probably put the stock one back on.
I just wanna add that if you deck the crap out of the head and/or the block its not a bad idea to degree the cam in somehow or another, and then set it to compensate for the change in deck height. You may get more HP from playing with cam timing but I think you will find that its not worth it.

when i had the cam gear tuned with pnp head, a gained 5whp on my auto without any low end loss when retarding 1.5 degrees. i'm sure its different with turbo. I always heard you're supposed to retard timing to compensate for higher compression of the turbo. isn't that what tsi recommends?

people spend $1000+ on mods for an NA car that yield a total gain of about 10 whp.
You can gain more than that by tuning the car with a cam gear. And the cam gear costs what, $250? And it is easy as hell to install.
As long as you tune every aspect (cam timing, ignition timing, fuel) you will most likely see a good gain from it.
I know this is different, but we installed cam gears on my friends turbochaged B18B, and gained 40 whp on 8 psi. I dont think you will have gains that are that large, but you will see some gains if its done right.

Im not gunna completely say its not gunna help. Im just saying I didnt see any gains either way, maybe you will have better results. I have a custom ground cam and it works out about the same as the stock one did on the dyno. If I advance it a degree or two, it shifts the power more toward mid range (lowers power curve), if I retarded it the results were inversly similar. On a DOHC motor you can tune a bunch out of the motor, I have heard of gains of up to 15-20 whp on a fully built setup.

i was only using the NA thing as a reference to the amount of money most people spend to make an additional 10 hp.
I know your FI, and the rest of the post was geared towards you.
I am going to run an adjustable cam gear later on with my setup. So i guess if you dont test it out, i will.

well IDK how helpfull that will be, you will more than likely be climbing out of your peak power sooner. That may actually slow you down. You really hafta know just what you need if you are gunna start playing with cam timing.
