K20 swap or turbo? ~Help in Rochester NY!~
I've found this in the for sale forums.
http://www.truehonda.com/inventory.p...tdetail&id=444
Now some of those parts may only fit an RSX, but I can sell them then, no? Then the only things that I know for sure that I'll need otherwise is the subframe and mounts (only company I know of is Hasport, though I've read that others make them). I havn't had a chance to PM truehonda and enquire as to what "all accesories" entails, but I'm assuming it will include at least some of the things that xproductionz listed. All that for about 6k. So you were pretty close on about the cost siharathb.
However this is the DC5R K20A engine (220hp). xproductionz, iif we go by your calculations, I would end up paying 10,000 for the K20A should "all the extras" not include any of the parts I would need. But even then I am assuming I could sell and swap those parts I don't need for those I do. Until I talk to truehonda however, I can't really say.
As for your Value Package Dezod, I noticed the downpipe was "catless". So does that mean it's not compatible w/ a cat? I'm assuming that's not the case, but just making sure. Also, throw in the timer, boost gauge, and PCV, and the VP is only about $400 cheaper than the full package with all the extras, which, I guess when spending that much money is quite a lot. Throw in an estimated 1k for installation though, and I'm spending about 5500. This would net me an estimated 160-170 hp, correct? So if I wanted to make my engine put out about the same amount of hp as a K20a, I'd need to invest more money improving the turbo system or perhaps other parts of the engine. And then I'd be lacking that wonderful helical LSD that's built into the K20a tranny. And I believe Qualife's LSD for the 6th gens (which I've been told fit the 7th gens) goes for about $900. Not only that but the more I boost the greater the chance I may damage my engine. thought proper tuning should prevent it.
Okay, one last thing before I finish this post. I really hope I'm not coming off as snooty or a-holeish (didn't know this board was censored) at all, I'm just trying my hardest to get all of my chickens in a row so to speak. I want to thank everyone that's posted thusfar for contributing (those that did contribute ). If I've said anything that seems or is misinformed, please correct me because as I said, I'm just trying to get all my numbers narrowed down as best I can and all my information set and correct. Again, thank you so much and please keep on talking! I really appreciate the help so much!
Edit: I just noticed that your website notes that:
"E-Manage will not include optional harnesses (sold seperately)"
and
"May require some hoses & fittings"
I knew about the hoses and fittings but I didn't notice the harness. That's another $150 right there for all of the harnesses should I want all 3. That changes the savings to a little less than 250

right now i am about to start a d16y8 buildup and piece together a turbo kit for it. Cheap as hell and tuning is also cheap. I can advance the timming without buying a ems and uberdata datalogging is less then 50$. If u really wanna save money then find a cheap rex or hatch and just get pistons, rods and go budget boost on a d and run 13's and maybe 12's on slicks. And like what civic01^ said, because if its ur daily driver how r u gonna get around if u r doing the swap or tuning etc something goes wrong and the car has to sit a day.
Whats up raccoon, would u like some more advice on what to do with ur money....haha well this is my experience so take from it what u will. I bought a used tsi turbo kit off ebay for 1650 (retail 2500, used to be more). Be careful of buying it used if u go that route. Mine came off of a show car that was barely driven. So I scored. However if u do more research youll see people talkin about hot turbos are hard to maintain bla bla bla...yea but its worth it. Ive thought about selling it...even thought about sellin it to u, but I got a deal on it and I cant wait to fire my turbo up this winter. Now heres the other side, if had 5000-10000 to spend, I would get a swap, it would be the sickest ever to have a dohc 200hp engine dropped in ur car. But I dont. But in all seriousness, 5000 into a civic, Id save up and get a better car G35 coupe to be exact. Anyways my point being, if u want to really get into ur civic, SWAP. In my situation, I chose a turbo, why u might ask???The oppurtunity was there and I took it. Good luck deciding, but one thing, always hold out, cause something better will always come along, I promise u!!!!!

What I meant about 15,000 was for
the swap itself and if he wanted to turbo it to make it even faster (just in case he gets power crazed --- i would =D) he can turbo the k20 swap and that would run about another 4Gs and then try to rebuild the motor for more power and turn up the boost.
swap = $6,000
turbo the k20 = $4000
fully build k20 the RIGHT way for turbo = about $5,000
because I know if you fully build b18's for a hatch it will run around $5,000 for high boost.

but i am basing this off of what his intent to spending for a new turbo kit vs a swap..
basically he was estimating which route to go roughly spending around 5500-6000 or so... so in general i was just stating for around 6000 you could get your d17 boosted running 160-170hp or go k20 with around 200 or so... basically i was just stating which would you get the more bang for the buck

As far as power, 180-200whp can be acheived with the T3/T4 on circa 8 PSI.
PCV is not required. It is a nice, clean option as apposed to a simple breather filter available through Pep Boys for $10.
As far as the E-manage....with the core package, it is only as sold as the main unit, which would require an injector & igntion harness at minimum. With the value package, our PnP harness is included which offers the main harness, injector & ignition harness all ready to roll. I think you misread or misunderstood that. The savings with the VP to the core is circa $250-400. Depending on options.
Its a celebration bitches!

a swap is the same as having a stock d17... its a engine from a stock car... i fill up with gas and change oil and liquids like a regular engine, with a turbo, you have all sorts of other parts you have to worry about. but a k20a2 with simple mods against a 10-12 psi d17 will die...
i on the other have don't have a k20a2... so i will eat a turbo d17(stock internals)...

Ah, I see. See, this is why I'm asking, because I don't know everything. Thanks for clearing that up Dezod. I probably had some stuff I wanted to say earlier today but I just got back and I'm tired as all hell so I'll post later.

Okay, well, I PM'd truehonda and asked for more information about the K20a. Hopefully I'll get a response soon. Until then, I'm going to do some more reading, and will probably PM you w/ some questions about turbos Dezod. This is quickly turning into a big learning experience for me like you guys would not believe. Thought I guess being a little obsessed about anything will result in further knowledge in the subject
But seriously, I'm very torn about this decision because it will be a big dent on me regardless of which I choose, so I'm trying to learn all I can about turbos, swaps, clutches, trannys (HA), and anything else. And like I said, I want to upgrade my suspension w/ the aforementioned parts (which I'll probably buy from you Dezod), so I've also been spending my time researching suspension parts.

In case u didnt want to spend too much, I was thinkin about selling a turbo kit I had a TSI extreme kit and I also have a greddy evo 2. The conditions of both are excellent. If u were interested pm me and we'll talk about it but i can trust u youll be well on ur way if u buy this from me and it wont hit as hard as a new set up.
Okay, well I got a message back from Truehonda. I'm not sure he understood exactly what I was asking, seeing as I get overly wordy sometimes. This was his response.
So "all accesories" have nothing to do with the rest. Well then, it looks like xproductionz was absolutely right. So if I were to go w/ his engine, it will end up costing me at least 8500 dollars. I'll have to sell a few parts off the k20a that I can't use to make up for the cost I suppose, also, like I said, I'm going to part out my D17. Don't expect all that much, but it's better than just scrapping it. For everyone that's still reading this, thank you once again for the help. I think I've decided to swap out my engine and my goal is to have everything in my posession and ready to go by the end of the summer. That should be ample time to save up at least a majority of the money.

1 year later.
...here we go:
...I desided not to swap, but to trade in my civic for ..(blank)...
To much wait fo me, I wouldnt be able to wait for 1 year for a swap.
$8500 good downpayment for the new si with k20/200hp.
Good luck on your wait man!
Well regardless of what I chose to do, turbo or swap, I'd have to wait 'till at least the spring anyway. I live in Rochester NY. We get snow from mid-november until about march. I'd rather not have my car out of comission during that time.
Edit: Downpayment? Then I'd be paying off the rest of the car till who knows when. I already own (technically) 100% of my car.

P.S. Topic starter didn't really read all the reponses but if you go turbo just build the block and be done with it (reach any hp you want). If you swap w/ a turbo kit on a stock k20 you can easily reach 300hp. Depends on your power goals.

....After Florida kisses Cuba, then maybe Americans can finally legaly visit Cuba!
But to ge to the topic, I will keep on sayin' - Turbo all the way!
I say go K20A or K20A2 hands down. I've been down both routes and though my swap was more expensive, I don't have all the problems associated with the turbo kit. Not all turbo kits will have problems, but then again, trial after trial after trial, there are more people on this site who have had problems with turbo kits than swaps.
Another huge factor that leans me toward going with a swap is the aftermarket. Hardly anyone has any parts for the D17 ... there is no real production LSD for the D17 and internals for it have just come out. As far as I have seen, there isn't a good, affordable good engine management tool. I think the AEM EMS is out, but for $1500 plus the cost of a good turbo kit, clutch, dyno tune, boost controller, (etc misc parts), you've already got a K20A2 swap paid for.

The sticker that reads "turbo" looks cooler then "dohc" - thats personal preference
