turbo spool question

ok, so im going turbo real soon on my d17. im just wondering if i boosted about 8 psi and drove the car daily, what would happen if im in constant boost. Usually, I drive 80-ish and thats like 3.8 rpms already. If i got like 90 ish it will be like 4.2k rpms. What would happen if i turboed? most of my miles are highway miles and im usually at 4k rpms. will my boost spool up the whole time? is there anyway to make boost not spool up during freeway driveS?

The turbo will not spool as long as the engine is not under LOAD. When an engine is under load or FULL throttle, thats when the turbo will spool. Driving down the highway may make it spole a little, but it wont be enough to cause any complications. Keep the car in vacuum and you will be fine.

not really cause the cars gonna feel alot slower when not under load. but it also depends on what size turbo your using. I think stock NA motors run at about a constant 16 vac. and with my t3/t4 I can keep it at 16vac on the highway at 80 all day. I always try to baby it and keep it about 10vac the most when daily driving. So far it's been 3 months and not a single prob. :knock on wood:

I have a T25, and it spools up some, but not too much. You can keep it at -18 to -16hg on the freeway. When driving like normal or on idle, it stays at -22 to -20hg or so Id say on the freeway. Occasionally when you go up a hill or something it will spool if your on cruise control. Witha T25 its a lot harder to keep it not under boost I would say. Daily driving (somewhat peppy driving) I usually hit 0psi to 1psi. a lot of times its when I need to get over, or some dic**** doesnt know how to drive. No probs over hear either, yet. I do a lot less freeway driving than stop and go, which sucks. I drive a lot everyday.

Aye, boost is dependant on engine load. As long as you arent making the engine really "work" you can stay out of boost even if you are past the point where when racing, you would be at full boost.

yeah, just like everyone else said......you can cruise down the highway at 70 and stay out of boost. If you come to a slight grade or more in the road, your car will be under a load to maintain the same speed, therefore you will be in boost.

Also, boost is throttle dependent. You can ease the throttle and stay in low boost or u can punch it and go into high boost.

Hehe, I love sitting in a gear or 2 higher then punching it and hearing the turbo slowly spool up as it gets into RPM range.

yeah, the last few days I drove about 150 miles stop and go. I was barely under boost, I only hit it 2 times when racing. I drove on the freeway a bunch too, the freeway is very easy to keep it out of boost. Just dont step on the gas hard, and you'll be fine. You can bring it up to 6800 rpm's (i have an lx, not sure of ex's redline) in 1st and not hit any boost. You have to learn to go easier on the gas. You dont have to step on it very hard to get the same pickup as before at WOT.

I raced a new Escalade truck and mustang gt. both of them lost. I beat the Escalade at 6lbs, and the gt at 9lbs. The mustang was so mad afterwards, it was great.
