Lightbulb Turboing my '02 EX

Ok, I had this in my original thread but it was closed because I had some questions in there that I could've found on my own... But this one I can't cause I need "expert opinion" so the FAQ's that I read say.

I'm looking to turbo my Civic. Only problem is that I don't know which setup to get or who the most dependable will be. I read the FAQ's and they all said consult pro's about chosing the right setup for the power and application I want. So here's what I want:

-About 40 HP boost, but I also need to know what psi depending on the set-up you suggest. I'd prefer something under 7 at most for my engine's safety.

-A setup that requires the least amount of precationary upgrades to my engine at under 7psi boost. I feel like keeping this car without problems for another 5+ years

-Best deal. I'm not looking for an über-hyper-formance turbine here, I'm not a strip racer in Fast and Furious that's gonna go gung-ho with $10g's

If I could please get some answers to these questoins or even links to places where I could read what my best set-up would be. But the thing I need most is assurance that turbo isn't going to totally junk my car! I've grown up my whole life with my dad shoving "turbocharger will kill your motor in the long run" down my throat my entire life so please give me that assurance. (Assume that it will be professionally tuned so no flaming about tuning)

Thanks in advance everyone!

Well if your not gonna be going all speedy demon about it then the TSI Extreme Kit would be a good buy. I think you can buy it anywhere from 2,500 to 3,000. It comes with everything thing you need to bolt up, including the t25 turbo, you can also upgrade to a t28 if you want for another 500 i think. Then you have the dezod kit, which will run you around 4k. If you have that kind of money it would also be a good buy, comes with a T3/4 turbo, intercooler piping, frontmount and everything. Tuning should cost around 100-200 an hour to get er done. Some gauges would also be a good idea, boost, and air fuel. Prob looking at around 5K if you go with the TSI kit, and possibly around 5.5K on the Dezod (including all accessories).

Mundelein eh? I'm from Itasca.
But what would be the difference from one to the other? Also, would I need to upgrade anything on my engine so that no long term damage is done?

If you don't want to run tons of boost I say TSI or custom (HKS manifold and T28BB). An upgraded clutch is probably always a good idea even though the stock one may hold on low boost. Also, there are plenty of people on here running stock motors on the boost levels you're looking for.

If the worst were to happen and ever blew anything, you could get a used D17 cheap.

I wouldn't spend 3g's if you only want 40 extra hp. Just spend 500 and get a 50 shot. It's not worth the cost of parts, install, and tunning for that.

There is no assurance. You're at the mercy of your own bad luck just like the rest of us. There are no gaurantees when it comes to reliability and turbocharging a car that wasnt designed to be turbocharged so if you're sitting there thinking that as long as you get it tuned there will never be any chance of blowing your motor, you better get that out of your head because thats a very bad misconception.

not 5gs. I just installed my TSI Extreme and it came to around 3100 for everything installed (by us). I just need a clutch and tuning. I was quoted 150-200 for the compelte tune, not by the hour. Dont say 5 gs. Shop around, dont order from them directly, and you'll get a good deal elsewhere. If you are easy on your motor most the time, it would be LESS likely to blow your motor, but can still happen. Your car will not be as reliable as it is stock basically, but will be pretty nice tuned and boosted. Just gotta have an extra 4 or 500 put aside incase your motor blows up on ya.

For the hassle, TSI isn't worth the savings.

definately. hehe. but for 40 hp, he should be ok without the best of everything. I will put only quality expensive parts on now. I will upgrade most everything in the kit anyways, and probably sell all my old stuff. The tsi kit will be good for much more than 40 hp at 7lbs as well. I was in 3rd at 2,000 rpms and it kicked me back pretty nicely in my seat. keep in mind this was 3rd gear and I had 4 people in my car. I only did it for 1000 rpms though, we were tuning. than my ICU busted, so Im getting the new one today or tomorrow. The people at TSI were very helpful and didnt even need my old unit back first. I have 30 days to send it in or they charge. Very nice/helpful people and this kit fit perfect other than a hose and the manifold basically. a few other things, but pretty nice kit and fit nicer than most people say.

I went to a tuning shop yesterday to aska few questions about turbos and checking out my car. He said $40 to put it on a lift and check it out as for what aftermarket stuff is on my car. Too much? Could I find a better deal? Cause most places have that minimal service charge bs...

As for turbos, he suggested Fmax (now Turbonetics) over the Dezod. At the end it'd come out to about 200 hp + or - and then with 15% drivetrain loss just about 165-170 hp at the wheels at 7 psi. Can't remember the make of the turbo, but it sounded like a great deal to me! End result would come to about $3100 installed. But to everyone who's saying I might blow my motor, I want to take extra precautions with motor upgrades so I don't.Thanks for all your help everyone. Remember, if you find any links to something that I'm lookin for don't hesitate to post! Thanks!

Exactly. I will have a kit ready to roll by late next week if you really want to play with the big boys.

T3/T4 Hybrid turbo
SS manifold
2.5" down pipe
Quality components like GReddy, TiAL, Garrett, Denso....
The set-up is capable of handling 200-300 WHP easily

Check out the reviews and pics...
