Internal
when the boost pressure is equal or greater to the spring in the actuator diapragham, the actuator pushes an arm that opens a gate inside the ehaust manifold that allows exhaust to bypass the exhaust turbine when peak pressure it reached.
Pros: Cheaper
Cons: the wastegate on internal ones tend to be small, and not ideal for heavily boosted setups
External
Mounts directly onto the turbo manifold, or elsewhere. When the boost pressure is equal to or greater to the spring setting on the wastegate, it pushes the gate open and exhaust bypasses the turbo and is either recirculated the the exhaust system or vented to the atmosphere (open dump)
Pros: Easier to tune, more reliable
Cons: More expensive.
