Different turbo stages
Different turbo stages
Ok I've had a search here, and I couldn't seem to find anything related to this dumb question I'm about to ask... what is this stage 1 turbo, stage 2 turbo etc business? Yes, I know it's a dumb question, but hey everyone's gotta start somewhere

you might have been reading the different stage cybernation kits for K20 swapped vics. Or it might have been a generaliztion of stage 1: just boost, and stage 2: boosted with internals. Etc

There are different stage exhaust turbines for turbos. The most common turbine in a t3 is a stage 1. It is in just about all T3's regardless of the .ar rating on the exhaust. Basically, the higher the stage, the larger diameter the exhaust turbine is. Then you have the trims. The trim is sometimes designated by a number, but most commonly designated by a letter (example, T3 turbo with a Stage 3 "P" trim turbine).
Now i have also heard the phrase "i have a 67 trim wheel". Basically that means that they have a 67mm inducer on their compressor wheel. And they can have a specific AOA (angle of attack) on their blades. The more aggressive the AOA is on the compressor, the quicker the spoolup time, but the lower maximum airflow. So you have to balance the AOA to achieve the spoolup and airflow that you want.
We have all heard the phrase "Stage II Turbo". Basically that is some Grand Turismo ricer crap. It is like the "Nawz" of the turbo world. Just like there is no "nawz", there really is no set "Stage II Turbo". Some manufacturers specify their turbos as "Stage I, II, etc", but it is really only to organize their parts in order from cheap to expensive.

Yup, so basically you should tell us where you see stage then we can look at it and tell you what it means. I'd say 9/10 times though stage refers to you getting more parts the higher the stage (hey whered stage -1 go lol i can't afford 1)
