Hwoody77 can only hope to improve
...

A pyrometer measures how hot/cold your exhaust gases are, which'll tell you if you are running rich or lean...

This is almost totally true.

They give some type of indication as to rich or lean, but can be very tricky.

Just because your EGT's went up doesn't necessarily mean your car is running lean. The air burns hotter than the gas in the combustion process. It may mean you have too much gas, which is gonna burn hotter too. So this gauge with a WIDEBAND Air/Fuel can THEN be very useful.

Optimal gauges IMO:

EGT aka Pyrometer (Exhaust Gas Temp)
Wideband O2
Boost/Vac

I'd say Autometer if you want to stay cheap, but they are kinda innacurate. '

I have DEFi and they are nice. Pretty accurate and quality too.

Blitz, HKS, GReddy....all make excellent gauges too.

They're fairly accurate, but they're not very precise and not very sensitive either. They read about the same as my Defi's do, but they'd get there and it would take quite a bit to get them to move around. The Defi processor is much more sensitive to noticing changes than the autometer sensors, but if you're ballparking, autometers are fine.

Example... my old autometer water temp gauge would read about 190 degrees.
My new defi gauge will bounce between 184 and 195 as you drive and the load on the engine changes. Stop, it'll climb above 200 in no time as air over the radiator slows.
The autometer might notice if you stop for long enough, but it just doesn't have the sensitivity to pick it up right away. It all has to do with the type of sensing device used.

Dezod is right, the best way to tell is a wideband, not an EGT. The temp doesn't always indicate true rich or lean, but it is better than those autometer cheapies....
