overboost protection

If you have a turbo how do you prevent overboost (spikes)? I read somewhere that you can have some sort of valve which pops off when the pressure is over a set psi. This releases all pressure so it can't blow the engine. If this valve pops off you have to manually goto the engine bay and reattach it.

What is this device and why don't ppl use it?

SEE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Another component not shown is a pop off valve (POV). Often not used on turbo Hondas, a POV is a safety valve that opens, and stays open until manually closed, when a preset boost level is reached, venting most if not all pressurized air. This prevents an overboost situation that may occur if there is a wastegate or boost controller failure."

see under the heading turbo basics: http://www.beesandgoats.com/boostfaq...rbo.html#Turbo

look under toyota supra HKS Racing Bypass Valves and read the description:

"They can also be used as safety "pop-off" valves if the second port is connected to a pressure source"

see:

*EDIT*

Found it. Greddy relief valve. http://www.greddy.com/ look under turbo->relief valve. Now, how do we use one of these things? where should we put it?

Or you can buy an electronic BOV and set the set gain to a low number. I don't spike at all...

If you're spiking, check your watsegate.

are you internally gated or externally? has it always spiked? what rpms does it spike at? or does that not affect it?

I spike 1psi if I floor it at 5000 rpms as I'm decelerating. The surge makes it go up a little. But other than that, I never see the needle move once it hits my mark, stays dead on.

I am internally gated on a T3/T04B, with a Blitz SBC Spec-S 4 stage electronic boost controller. That unit is amazing, does everything.

sounds like your wastegate just wasn't functioning at all... if you have an external gate and put the vac. hose on the wrong nipple outta the two on the external gate, you might have been plumbing it in the wrong one, AKA, your wastegate wasn't functioning didn't know what kinda boost it was letting happen before it's eyes... which in the end equals boom.... mine i guess just blew the HG, and maybe cracked a piston, easy fix, but don't feel the need to boost this motor anymore.... looking to get a factory turbocharged car and motor now so i know it will be able to handle a little OOOpsie's along the way wihtout fu.cking up like mine did on like 2 PSI... lol

If his wastegate was broken it would be more than just a spike.

exactly... that's what i was saying... if it's broken or he has it hookup up wrong then It's not working, therefore it's not gonna do it's job, and everything is just gonna blow right by it no matter how much boost flys past it... Not GOOD!!!!

ok good deal... is it an external or internal? i'll make it easier, if it comes right off the Turbo a brassy color it's internal and i don't know how to adjust that, if it comes off the manifold then you have an external gate... and those are usually a little better and hold boost better...

its an internal waste gate, i bought my turbo used, and i thinkg the problem was the solenoid from my e-01 stoped working so it never opened the wastegate....
