A Question for the Turbo'd
A Question for the Turbo'd
So, I'm very close to putting a SF turbo kit on my car after lots of thought. Just a few last things to clear up here.. first, I don't want to do anything major with this car. 7-8 psi only. Just looking for some added power on my daily driver.. And no, I won't want to add more boost or whatever later. like I said, it's only my commuter car, I've got an 04' Sti in the garage for the weekends, so I *really* have no reason to try and build my Civic.I just want a reliable boosted daily driver to increase the fun factor over my n/a D17. I see so much stuff about fuel delivery, emanage, vafc's.. etc.. so I need a straight up answer and maybe we can make this sticky for everybody. To accomplish what I want here, is the SF kit alone enough? Will I be able to run 7-8psi without having to invest in extra electronics and all that? Or is it inevitable to get reliability I'll have to worry about all these additional things? And would this really affect my overall reliability of the car? I've been building up imports and Hondas since the mid 90's but just don't know an incredible amount about this D17.. When I boosted my 99Si it was an easy affair. Bolt it on and I had no problems whatsoever (except a blown head gasket but I claim full responsibilitly on that). My boy also had the same kit on his 6th Gen Ex with the B16 swap and no problems for him either. Other than traction, but that's all boosted hondas from my experience.
Ok, bottom line.. what additonally do I need to do to this D17 to run reliably daily on 8psi? Is the SF kit good to go and what sort of problems should I expect???

I'd say if you just want a full kit without the hassle of searching for parts go with the SF I suppose. I think you might like the Turbo Discounters kit if this is just a daily commuter because it has a T25... more usable power in the low end, as opposed to losing a bit of low end with anything bigger. But their fuel system is kinda iffy.
But if you choose the SF Kit, the fuel system would be good enough to get you where you want to go.
It all depends on how you drive your "commuter".
You might want to go look into a clutch though. I'd say the ACT HC5-HDOO. You don't need a clutch with holding power higher than that... it would be pointless and a waste.
You're going to need a boost controller to make 8 psi though. You can just go with a manual boost controller though. Cuz it seems like you are just going to stay around 7-8.
And since you're boosting a non-factory turbo car with a stock engine... reliability is always an issue. The engine isn't built to take the beating. If you stay within limits and do the upkeep, it could last for years.

Yeah the SF kit is fine for that. But I recommend staying away from 8psi. I blew my head gasket with 7psi and my car has never seen lower than 93 octane.
6psi is safe for a daily driver. 8psi if you use alcohol is fine, but then you are pushing more than you need to.

Thanks. Like I said, I'm new to this particular motor. On 6psi, what kind of HP/Tq do you think I can expect.. I know from all my years w/ DSM's every psi of boost is about 7whp added. With the SF kit how much boost does it put out w/ no Boost controller.. I'm just gonna use a manual.. like the Turbo XS probably. Also, is it worth it to upgrade to a greddy Type-S with the kit? How is the one that comes with it? As far as how I drive it, I don't dog it or anything, but I don't shift at 2500 either. I go about 30 miles a day with it. It's just that after driving my Sti all weekend(sorry honda guys) it's a little bit of shock jumping in the 130hp Ex to go to work. So I need to meet somewhere in the middle of the two.. 160whp/tq would be about ideal if that's what 6psi will get me. I've already got the clutch taken care of.. I picked up an ACT a while back(necessary for when my wife drives) as the stock one was getting a little mushy. So that shouldn't be an issue.

I'm pretty sure the wastegate comes set from SF for about 4psi. You shouldn't have a problem making 160 @ 6psi. The average is about 8-10hp/psi as far as I've seen. I don't know about 160 ft-lbs tq though...lol@Hondas. If you are trying to do this without unnecessary spending, then just keep the BOV with the kit. I love the GReddy Type S though. Perfect sound, level, and flow. It's common, but not as played out as the HKS SSQV (IMO of course).

SF wastegate doest come set at anything... u have to set it yourself.
the torque is high on the dynos i've seen from SF, i think at 6psi you'll be pushing 150-160ft lb which is very respectable in a honda...
go with it, 7psi will be fun and you shouldnt have to worry about hurting anything as long as you keep your civic in check
