Question 99 Ex w/ turbo......

My bro has a 99 Ex and wants to put a greddy turbo kit on it. How much hp do you think he would put to the wheels? He was either thinking about the greddy or the overboost turbo kit. Thanks for the info. imp:

prolly about 170-180. greddy's downpipe is very restrictive due to the kit being carb legal...have him checkout revhards kit

Thanks for that info, you think its better to go with the turbo on that motor or save up for a motor swap? He's gonna be keeping the car for a while and wants to keep adding performance parts onto it. Is the potential for the Ex engine worth keeping or go for new motor?

assuming its a D16Y8, which I believe it is, I would say go for the turbo, and build it so he can boost more

nothing wrong with a turbo single cam. they're all pretty close once they're built for boost anyway.

I say build the D series, they dont get enough recognition as it is, besides a GSR swap will end up costing a whole hell of a lot more after internals and boost.

sleeve and all that to a SOHC will make 300hp as well.. mor e if you want... i say turbo SOHC.. you could build motor for price of swap (less actually, with GREAT build up), then drop 3k or so on turbo and boost to low 12's... it can happen, ESAY bro...

Turbo the D series. Soo much fun. People are like, what motor did you swap to? I say it's the stock engine. They make fun, then we race and I make fun lol.

I was doing some more research and found the Edelbrock turbo kit. I have decided to turbo the Ex rather than motor swap. The kit is pretty expensive ( cheapest i found is $2999 shipped), but it comes with everything you need even a new intake manifold and cpu software. Ive been to almost every D-series engine website, they have been helpful but just trying to find out as much as possible. Thanks.

I disagree... turboing a D series is a lost cause... instead of spending thousands of dollars on trying to get that SOHC good numbers, you'd be better getting a B18B for like 1k and working on that motor. It's cheaper and you get better numbers. Turbo is the best way to go, just be sure it is street legal in your state.

I've seen people run around with turboed D series engines and they are as fast as a stock integra gsr...

Turbo Kit on D series | $2999 | 170 hp
B18B with Basic Bolt Ons | $2000 | 190 hp

I never said you can't get hp out of a D series... I just said it's not worth the money.

you will not get 50hp out of a b18b with "basic" bolt ons. you must be looking at AEM's "dyno sheets" for their V2.

Ok, if you dont think a sohc is worth investing money into, I think a nice example to prove one wrong would be to take a look at catalyst's gallery and you will see his 1/4mi time on 9lbs of boost w/ pump gas and he hasnt touched the bottom end yet. Btw, I thought the last time I checked, this was a 7th Gen civic website?

i have a d16y7 , and i was thinking about turbo too.... but i talked to a few people and its hard to get power out of the eninge, but it can be done.. costly.. its easyer to go with a swap, plus if your buddy wants to keep adding, not alot he can do once he turbo'd his stock engine
