Turbo or build motor?
Turbo or build motor?
I dont know if i want to turbo my 2k1 civic or if i should just build my topend. Is it worth making it turbo, how much boost could i run on a stock motor, and will i risk breaking stuff on any amount of boost? If i was do the motor (cam, port and polish, titanium springs and retainers, and a DC Sports header) how much of a diffierence would i be looking at, and how much fatser do you think either would make it. If i do a turbo it will be with stock internals.
I have a 2k1 ex 5sp
Thanks

TURBO. Much more cost effective. Call SFpower if you want some quick power. 5-6 psi is safe and a lot faster than what you have now.
seriously, if you got the time and cash, build the motor (for the price of a turbo kit) then spend 500 bucks on a good wetshot and dump in a buttload of nitrous. youll be spanking turbo 7th gens left and right.

"If i was do the motor (cam, port and polish, titanium springs and retainers, and a DC Sports header)"
Indicating that "If he was to go all-motor" he would need the header.

im thinking about going n/a too. I have a few questions though: where's a good place to get all this stuff? Where would I get a new vtec cam? And I know where to get the header. Im thinking about cam, port&polish, ti. springs and retainers, some header (undecided), tanabe r-spec cat-back, random tech. catalytic converter and an aem CAI. Either the AEM or that one off ebay that sucks it from the front.

alright. As a rough estimate, how much horsepower would I be looking at if i did all the things I mentioned plus getting block sleeves, pistons, rods, and maybe knife-edging the crankshaft or something. From what I've heard, Honda cranks are pretty good. Also, how much money would I be looking at? Im considering this because it's my dad's car, and he might not let me buy a turbo kit for it; so I have to look for alternate methods of HP gains.

a nice setup would be a 11:1 CR or higher, with nitrous. probably a 100 - 150 shot
well, i was talking about a completely street legal civic. Ive been planning for a turbo, but I don't think I can get one, so I'm trying to get HP some other way. With keeping it street legal in mind, what kind of HP gains do you think I would see if I put, say, $2,000 into a n/a setup. That's including the bolt-ons, so $1k for internals.

1k will get the internal parts, they wont get put in unless u put it in, 1k wont get u any parts for the head, so ur 2k will prob get u some pistons and rods and get those put in maybe. so right there ur out of money and u havent even got the bolt ons or the head work. so by the time u get head work ur at another 1k and with the bolt ons ur at maybe another 500, so right there ur at 3500, might as well get a turbo
I think I'm leaning more twords turbo, then motor. But, who makes turbo kits for our cars, or should i buy a turbo and all that seperatly? Also, what kinda of time would I be running if I run around say 6psi of boost? Just curios of what I should be looking forward to.
Thanks

yes SF makes turbo kit max rev make turbo kit, turbo discounters makes turbo kit, there are picts of all these on the site, then u have the people that piece them together myself being one of those
i would say u can make it into the 14 with 6psi

WOW.. bold statement about the 100+ shot of nitrous.. i would LOVE to see one of ourt motors, even built handle a 150 shot.. much less at 11:1 compr.. man.. do you know what youre talking about??? do you know how much stress a 150 shot puts on the motor? you are crazy.. even fully built, that wouldnt last 10 runs on the track.. unless you are talking a 3k build up with headwork and all.. and if thats the case, who wants to refill bottle all the time.. built motor + turbo is the only way to FLY.. and hell yeah bro.. iwish you had built that motor.. i would LOVE to race an 11.0:1 compression D17 with a 150-200 shot of nitrous.. you would have the lead all the way until 2nd gear when your ring landings fried into your block! you cant be serious.. NOONE runs 200shot on a single overhead... it will never last 10 runs at track, let alone daily use.. i hit mid-high 13;s (mids coming with better tires) on my DAILY DRIVEN psi... if i raised a little, put in race gas, and did a little headwork and stuff... i would be looking at 13.0 or so.. dont believe me, wait till cat puts his turbo back on with the DH head and hits a 13.1 or so @ 9psi... its gonna happen.. and its gonna be FINE in the motor...O<M>G ... 200 shot in a 1.7l SOHC... HILARIOOUS

Dave Hickman hates nitrous because of how much extra wear and tear it puts on an engine.
I trust this man with my engine, he went 9's on a smaller budget than california's!

dont be so cocky futurexsswap just cause you have turbo doesnt mean your the man. Plus a 75 shot would be putting out as much power or more considering how nitrous pretty much doubles the tourqe on just a 50 shot in our engines.

Yea im SOOOOO sick of RSX!!! Hes constantly posting his car all over the internet and always bragging.
yes you would need the entire motor fully built to handle the large shot of nitrous. and yes, the 1.7sohc motor can be built to handle that large of a shot. there wont be any stock parts left in the engine, but it can run a shot like that. ever heard of nitrous ramping? its where you dont dump all the nitrous in the engine at once.
yes you would have to deal with refilling the bottle, so? i wouldnt have any sort of inclination to spray 24/7. maybe once a month at most.
but...catalyst is right. even motors that are built for nitrous exclusively will eventually break (as will motors exclussively for turbo). the only downside of the nitrous is how much wear it will put on the motor.
btw: i give your motor another 30k miles at most before the turbo fries it.
