Mix and Match Turbo Kit?

What's up 7g kids, I'm considering a turbo setup in addition to my 7g Ricer EX, so I've been trying to do research. I just went through all the threads in this forum and I didn't really find anything that answers this question:

How feasible is it to buy all the parts in a turbo kit separately, and how cost effective/reliable would this be?

I'm looking at the costs for a complete turbo kit (say, the "Superior" kits for comparison) like the TSI Superior kit with T25BB for $1999. I tried to look up the parts separately and found that it was somewhat cheaper (though I'm missing prices for some parts). Can someone please tell me what they think about this? This is completely conceptual so please don't flame me for being cheap. (though I am)

This is off the parts list from MaxRev:

Used T25 turbo (eBay) ~300 or T3/T4 Hybrid Turbo ~500
HKS Turbo Manifold - 265
MaxRev Down Pipe - 280
Fuel Pressure Regulator - 115
Map Unit (what's this??) - ?
Oil Return Line and Fitting - ?
Air Filter w/Piping - ?
HKS SS BOV - 160

So before the missing prices, the total price ranges from ~$1100 with the T25 turbo to ~$1300 with the T3/T4 Turbo (I might need a wastegate) for a non-intercooled solution (I'm looking for about +50-60 whp).

I'm gonna take the kit to a shop to install, so the shops might have these parts. Hopefully they won't rip me off. I'd appreciate any help I can get.

I bought all my parts separately with a bunch of custom work. Your setup might be a little odd though.

-If you use the HKS Manifold, you need to use a T25 Turbocharger
-Then if you use that combo... what are the chances that MaxRev's downpipe would fit (made to fit up to a T3 end on a MaxRev manifold to make it to the exhaust.)
-Fuel Pressure Regulator won't do anything for you unless you are converting your fuel system.
-MAP unit hides boost from the MAP sensor doesn't cause the ECU to freak out
-Oil Return line will probably cost you about $30-50
-Air Filter and piping: We'll say around $150 for a custom
-You need a wastegate... all turbo cars need a wastegate
-HKS SS BOV: Nice unit
-You still need to address fuel.

for fuel, contact Catalyst about SF's fuel system. It's real nice, and he sells it for like $550. It comes with the SF turbo kit, though.

YOU NEED A WASTEGATE!!!! if you have a turbo, and you like your engine, you need a wastegate. If the turbo you purchase does not have an internal wastegate, then you must purchase an external one.

If you are on a budget, just get a turbo that has an internal one. They work great, in fact, i use them on most of my setups i have had soo far.

So if I go with a T25 setup with internal wastegate, should i spring the extra $$ for the T25 Ball Bearing Turbo? Also, how much should installation be? I have my shop quoting me $800 for labor to install it.

i got some parts from the sf kit since im on a budget and I need to get a t3 turbo, intercooler, intercooler piping, bov, rc fuel injectors, and probably an apexi s-afc on my own. I got a t3 turbo off of ebay which does come with an internal wastegate....only cost me about 130 bucks shipped. The t3 is in excellent condition. I ordered my BOV last night and with my next pay check from work, which is this coming monday, ill be able to just about complete my kit.

The dual ball bearing turbo is nice, but both Mike Stafford and Dave Hickman agree that it isnt worth the extra $$$.

Not Saying that agains SF but against the guy that said they would charge 800 for Labor and if he's willing to pay that in labor why not buy Catalyst's Used turbo (if available for 2100 i think and just drive to him since they will install them for 300

"Absolutely need"... depends on your definition. But the basics:

Turbocharger
Turbo Manifold
Downpipe
Oil feed and return lines
Wastegate
Intake Piping
Piping from Compressor to Throttle Body
Fuel Management
Blow off Valve

Then: "upgrades to run something meaningful"
Intercooler (if you want to run more boost so it's a cooler charge)
Intercooler piping
Clutch Kit
Boost Controller

Build it yourself, it is worth the experience....
I have all my parts in:

t3/t04b internally gated - 310$ shipped 90 day warranty (got an awesome deal)
manifold - http://www.jgstool.com/turbo (I also had flanges built for me) approx 150$ for all
downpipe - building myself 3" piping approx. 100$ - 150$
hks fmic - used 250$
ic piping - http://www.jegs.com mandrel bent aluminized mild steel approx 80$ shipped
gauges - a/f, boost, and pod approx 130$ shipped
air filter - filter off my AEM cai.....can't beat free

fuel system
stainless steel braided line.... http://www.summitracing.com approx 60$ shipped
cartech fully adjustable fmu off of ebay 185$ shipped brand new
255lph walbro fuel pump off of ebay 80$ shipped brand new

extras
4 quarts of Mobil1 Syn 5$ a quart
4 Iridium NGK Plugs 6$ each
various clamps and hoses
welding

This has cost me approximately 2 grand....
Doing the fuel system this way costs less then the SF fuel system and
IMO is the best way to do it.....
Either way you look at it...you are going to need a bigger fuel pump to fun more boost
you might as well do a return fuel system while you are at it

future plans
greddy emanage - approx 300$ - 350$
greddy profec e-01 - approx 300$
venom injectors - approx 300$ - 350$
act clutch - 350$
revhard manifold - 400$
tial 38mm wastegate - 250$

Approx 3500 - 4000 and may I be arrogant enouch to say...much better then sf power kit, more boost, more power...and I learned a hell of a lot about my car researching and building this kit....

Do it, it is worth it
Brandon

You bought 550cc injectors?! You are most likely going to experience idling problems with these. I've read a lot of posts on the E-Manage group on Yahoo, and most of the people seem to agree that the e-manage has a limit of larger than stock injectors it can control, something along the lines of 150%.....Just be careful.....

That only applies to a full replacement of the OEM injectors. The 550cc is a subinjector, which should be perfect, seeing as how zinkyroo is running two 440cc injectors in his turbo setup.

Cliff notes: ONLY ONE 550CC INJECTOR!!

if you buy all the corect part they sure will install it even if they are wrong lol all they want is money you better go to a shop that has a good reputation for turbo kits and if youare buying all the arts you better read over this http://www.beesandgoats.com/boostfaq...ml#TurboBasics
because buy all the parts is not as easy at is seems especially for a custom fuel setup buch of pople jsut buy a better fuel line fuel pump and like a controller and push moore than 6psi its not safe to push more than 6psi on that setup cuz of your fuel injections and so on!!! jsut read ove r that and it will give you an idea what to look for!!!
