Blow-off Valve
I have a 2002 Civic Ex but my brother has a 2002 GTI. I was wondering this. Is the blow-off valve a good addition to a 2002 GTI 1.8T. I know it is but my dad wants solid information and details on why. I have explained to him that it releases the pressure created by the turbo when the throttle body is closed but he wants more, is there anything else I can tell him and would an HKS universal BOV be a good buy or which would you recommend?

on a stock car i dont think it would be necessary, other wise they would come with one from the factory, BOV releases excess pressure inside the intake tube so that it doesnt surge back into the turbo and over a period of time hurt it.

GET A greddy one or a TYPE XS RFL (Really Friggin Loud) but as far as i know with the jetta 1.8's and the golfs.. ur not supposed to upgrade or change the BOV set up its just not recomended.. go check a VW forum.. they'll tell you why its bad. not tryin to rain on ur parade.. i just dont wanna see the car ****ed up

I have been on www.vwvortex.com for a while now and I know that a majority of the people on there are totally against BOV's. From what I have been told and what I have read on their forums, Audi's and VW's are supposed to be run with Diverter Valves and not BOV's. Too many people that have installed a BOV on either one of these cars have been having problems. BOV's vent the access air from the charge pipe into the atmosphere and DV's recirculate AND vent off access air in the charge pipe. Under low boost presure, DV's recirculate the access air in the charge pipe to prevent the turbo from lagging. It recirculates the air back through the turbo to keep it spooling. Under high boost presure, DV's vent access air in the charge pipe into the atmosphere to prevent turbo lag. The reason why the DV doesn't recirculate the air under high boost is because it's not needed due to the fact that the turbo is already spooling really fast. It's kinda hard to explain so your better off going to that site and ask around.

Didn't you guys just listen to him? You dont want to use a B.O.V. on the 1.8T engine. this was posted on a local board here
I bought a new blow off valve for my 2000 audi a4 1.8t and my engine stalls when i slow down because my rpms get to low. I think its cause it vents to atmosphere. I was just wondering if you guys knew anything to help it or a good technique to keep pressing the gas until it idles and breaking at the same time.... The thing is is that when i slow down i keep tapping the gas and then it will settle down and idle like normal.
response: Now that I think about it thats not possible. The maf is preturbo so that wont help at all. The only way to fix that issue is to recirculate the box back into the intake stream after the maf. Its been a common problem with people trying to use a bov on a 1.8T with stock management.
You aren't supposed to be venting into the atmosphere. You need to recirculate it.

if you have a manual keep the clutch engaged, forcing the engine to maintain a higher rpm, even aftrer you've let off the gas. the car's momentum will mechanically prevent the car from stalling and eventually you will be at a stop. From my buddy with a dsm, he said that safc system has a program to help compensate for the atmosperic bov. look into it, i'm sure you'll find something.
