New Pistons?

Do we need new pistons when we get a turbo? Also, what's the best gains outta a turbo made for our cars? this may sound stupid, and the safest?!

according to catalyst, he got his LX to 166 whp with his turbo boosting at about 5-6 psi... Safe is not to go beyond 8 psi...if you want to go over that, you'd need new pistons and upgraded internals.

WRONG! Cat has run over 10 psi safely. YOU JSUT HAVE TO PREVENT DETONATION( as catalyst does)

Detonation is when the fuel explodes inside of the cylinder, instead of burning. When the fuel detonates, it burns un-controllably, causing the piston to jolt from side to side. It can also cause head gaskets to blow, ring lands to crack, pistons to crack, cylinder walls to blow, and rods to bend.

You can prevent detonation by many methods....

The most common is higher octane gas. The higher the octane, the more controlled the burning is inside the engine.

You can also use water/alcohol injection. The alcohol actually increases the octane of the fuel.

You can run an intercooler, which cools down air temps, causing the engine to make more power with less cylinder pressure.

You can retard the ignition timing, which allows the burn to escape faster, before it has the chance to detonate.

There are even more ways, but they are to numerous to list.

I was running 15 psi without any detonation, and i am running 9 psi daily right now. It is all in the tuning.
