transmission problem

here's the deal. i failed my emmission test for the following reasons:

P1298 - Manufacturer specific code
P0740 - Torque converter clutch circuit

i looked up the codes on this thread
http://www.7thgencivic.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=182026
for both post#1 and #9

P0740 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction
P0740 Problem in Lock-up Control System

P1298 Electrical Load Detector Circuit High Input
P1298 Electric Load Detector (ELD) Circuit High Voltage

anyway, i took my car to a transmission specialist and they had to take my transmission apart to find out the problem. they're telling me that there's something wrong with my clutch converter and that it would cost $2,450. i only have 42k miles on my car. could this really be possible?! please help me. i'm thinking if i have to spend that much money anyway, that i could just replace my engine and get a k20 (i'm not familiar with the process yet, but it costs just about $3,000 to my knowledge). what do you suggest? thanks in advance. btw, i have a 2001 lx auto.

thats an odd problem. i'd first take it to another shop to get a second opinion, probably Honda if you can even tho they charge more money they'll give you a more accurate answer.

if worse comes to worse and you have to replace your tranny to fix the problem, i'd suggest you get a used tranny. they should cost around $300-$400 dollars.

Take it in to a good honda dealership for an estimate. It could be somthing simple that the general automotive shop isn't familiar with. If anyone will be able to properly figure out the problem, it's the guys that work on the same cars every single day. Practice makes perfect.

Good question. There are auto wreck yards all over the place, but most seem to have older, crappier cars and who knows how the trans was cared for originally. Personally, I'd avoid wreck yards and look for a tuner who may have replaced the trans with a built up replacement, or swapped to a manual.. someone who probably took better care of it to begin with. Ya never know what you might be getting from a wrecked vehicle.

You may look to ebay for a used tranny, but you'll probably have to take a road trip to get it. I wouldn't get my hopes up too high to find somthing good locally.. be prepared to get a friend with a pickup or work van to help you out, and take a road trip.

Just too bad you didn't try a dealership first for a estimate.
