Only the A2 will pass smog. You cant use an A because the Type R ECU wont pass the Gas tank pressure feedback test. *what ever its called* It doesnt have that sensor.
yeha u do need to get it BAR'ed. and if its not done right ur out and its flagged a gross polluter. than good luck with that.... thats why i didnt do it on my k20a2 civc. whatever u do good luck. im selling mine it cost me way to much.

i have done it, its easy, just get your car to run stock, with stock airbox, header and all the plugs and vacum lines in the right place, no check engine lights.. and your good to go, you can put a k20a2, k20a3, k20z. make sure you have the stock ecu also. and they do a sound test so have your stock mufffler or something really quiet.
they also hook your ecu to their computer to make sure there are no errors
i also heard of my friend passing with a k20a but i think he had kpro... they just didn't like the type R stock header... they didn't check my ecu to see if it had kpro, but apparently, if you have kpro with the correct setting and tunned, that their computer wont even notice its a standalone ecu
