Two years jail due to illegal modifications on car

Pulled this off of shortnews.com Thought it was interesting. Sorry if it's a respost.

Two years jail due to illegal modifications on car

A strong message has been sent to all those who choose to drive cars that that have been illegally modified. Gareth Taylor a 23 year old man has been jailed for causing the death of a 10 year old on his way to school.
A wheel from the extensively modified car left it and hit 10 year old Logan Patterson as he was walking to school last March.
The Judge said that the illegal modifications on Taylor's car caused the accident, it was hoped by Taylor's defence Lawyer that he would get a home detention sentence of around two years, after he spoke of his clients remorse.

Even if he got two years, he is still responsible for the maintainance of his vehicle. So I think 2 years for the death of a 10yo girl is getting off pretty easy. Anybody agree?

It's sad to know you can live your life planning to get straight A's, get your Doctorate to cure cancer, or whatever, and then get killed going to Wal-Mart, or some mundane activity. I suggest if you're unsure of the safety issues of the modifications you are doing, chances are you shouldn't do it.

thats just stoopid... the article should be more detailed. i mean how did modifying the car cause the wheel to fly off? if he changed to aftermarket rims and new lug nuts, that is not illegal. its like saying an illegal modified car ran over a pedestrian and is sentenced to 5 years in jail because he had an illegally modified car and was going fast. i mean wtf, any car can go fast. if the car exploded cause of the nos tank then fine but it didnt actually cause the accident so...

If the wheel was stock from Honda then he would probably get off and Honda would be the one in trouble...

I think 2yrs is not that bad for killing a kid. Just think what the parents had to go though. I want to know what mod he did to have a wheel fly off. About three yrs. ago my car was broke down in a lot. I left it sit for like a week. When I returned and got it running right before I got in for my long highway drive home I noticed 4 of my 5 lugs were missing. I then realized someone had tried to jack my rims but didn't have a key for the last lug. Maybe someone has a death wish for me I don't know. dumb a** people.

i feel really sorry for the kid but he is now jailed for illegally modifying his car which caused death to a 10 year old child. the man never killed anyone. the man was wrong for adding illegal aftermarkey parts but he had no idea this would happen. i think 2 years jail is wrong. a tire can come off anyones car. i think he should be ticketed like veryone esle for having illegal modified parts. this was probubly a car enthusist driving his car with no intention of killing someone. now if he was speeding or commiting an illegal driving activity that would be grounds for jail time.

Hey Liq if YOU read carefully it said "it was hoped by Taylor's defence Lawyer that he would get a home detention sentence of around two years, after he spoke of his clients remorse. "

It was "hoped", they were trying to plea bargain, in reality "Gareth Taylor a 23 year old man has been jailed "

Geeze, do you people friggin READ?

2 years for involuntary manslaughter from a wheel falling out seems a bit severe. It seems to have a politicized message to deter "street racing" and F&F fans.

What would the parent do? This probably happened in a matter of seconds so they could they just jump in front of the tire?

I think 2 years is more than fair! Yes, he had no motive or intention of killing the child. His negligence caused the death of an innocent child. By not checking his tires, making sure each lug is tight, on a regular basis on his vehicle, he's responsible indirectly. This is no different than getting sued if someone slips and falls on an icy driveway on your house.

maybe but i was taught to look both ways when crossing the street
im pretty sure the kid was running across the street with out looking.
if the guy had a modified car. my guess would be that the exhuast would have been LOUD.... even tapping the gas u could hear it.

I agree!!

If you go to honda and buy a car, Sometimes they sell cars with aftermarket parts already on the car. And when your driving down a freeway, you well see rubber on the side of the road. That's because tires come of and so do rims sometimes. I had a friend, that had the same thing happen to his car not that long ago and he said that he just got done making sure his lugs were tight. I feel bad for the kid

Since when is putting new wheels and tires on the car illegal??? this is a bunch of BS... what if the same thing happed with stock tires on? I think its crazy how they think aftermarket parts are illegal? Is this a conspiracy or what!

Ok, first, I feel really bad for the kid and his family. That is very sad. I have a few questions though. When they talk about illegal modifications, are they talking about the wheels/tires or performance modifications? Things like exausts and intakes are not a problem, right? Do wheels/tires fly off cars a lot, even if put on by professionals at a shop? Is putting rims/springs on a car a problem? Sorry to post many questions, just concerned.

Thanks
