If someone were to move to Phoenix
there are good and bad sections in all zip codes...you can be in a million dollar house and drive 10 miles and be scared.
it all depends on what you like and want to be close to. hockey and pro football are west side, ritzy clubs and rich people is scottsdale, tempe is a college town, areas like surprise and queen creek are far from everything but its all new and you can still get a bunch of house for relatively cheap..

i find alot of action on the west side....so does SOHCScreamer. if you like more laidback bars you can get that on the westside. if you want swanky, dress code, no hat, $15 cover bars with fake money hungry women, get on the east side...i think im biased though being from the west side my entire life.
Don't care too much for nightlife stuff, talking more about shopping, movies, restaurants, hockey, but also don't want to pay 500k for a house.
Do the houses have basements there?

I've seen some builders start making basements but its like double to cost of the house. I live in Gilbert, I love it because I am in a quiet part of town but relatively close to tempe and scottsdale were everything goes on. West Chandler and Awhatukee are nice also. If you find something you like you can give anyone of us the area and address and we could tell you if it is nice. Its hard because Phoenix is trying to drive out the bad areas by putting nice house right in the middle of the bad areas hoping to push out the bad area.

Sounds like glendale/peoria for you. i lived in snottsdale and 2 diffrent places in glendale, gotta say i like the west side better. Just make sure you do all the checks on the area, for example i would deff. call the local police station and talk to them about the neighborhood. Let me know if you need a realitor, my folks just bought a place in goodyear and they were pretty happy with thier realitor. you may also like parts of tempe or mesa (east side)
there are basement houses in avondale but they are in the 500k range and up...3 years ago, they were half that. there are nice areas in peoria. my buddy is a pro baseball player and moved from north scottsdale to 51st ave and pinnacle peak and loves it on this side of town.

Interesting, what exactly is urban sprawl ?? I just can't see not having a full basement. How do they build houses in AZ, do they sit on a footer or a concrete slab ?? In PA we have to worry about frost, so if we were to build a house with no basement, we would dig a trench at least 3 ft deep and pour a footer and lay it up with block or poured wall, then sit the house on top of the block wall. If you were going to do that, you might as well spend the extra money and lay up a few more courses of block or concrete and have a full basement. Also, if you build out for more sq. ft, then you will have more roof which means more shingles.
I do excavating for a living, so I am just curious about this

We dont have porches either, and alot of houses have the front door on the side of the house. Mine is like that, I dont like it you look at the house and all you see is a garage door.
urban sprawl is were the city just keeps growing but out...like my old house in surprise was 30-40 minutes from down town and an hour an a half from the furthest other part of the valley queen creek
Most of the time if a basement is wanted. you can build on a lot that is sloped. So it not really a basement, but considered more to be a walk-out basement.
As to the guy who asked if most the stuff here was built on footers or slab, it depends on where you build in the state. Most of the flat down towards the south are built with slab, but more of the homes that built in the northern part of the state are built probably 50/50 with footers and slab. It just depends on how the property is you buy.
And also, the more slope on the property, the more your house is going to cost.

glendale\peoria\deer valley are the best imo....glendale and peoria are the best choice cuz real-estate is just going to skyrocket, they're build the arena, the 101 is right there, schools are everywhere, and depending on what part you live in grand ave is right there and they're in the midst of completely revamping that
you guys see that huge land deal...
Two home builders and a mall developer are planning what amounts to a small city on a vast piece of West Valley land used to test cars.
As many as 30,000 homes could go up on 5,500 acres of desert that DaimlerChrysler has held as a proving grounds since 1958. The carmaker sold the land for a little more than $312 million this week in a deal that ranks as the top land sale in state history
west valley is going to be growing HUGE...better get to work on that 303

Well, it all depends on where you prefer. For me I prefer living in Tempe since I use to live there and moved just about a few miles out of Tempe. I think that Tempe is smack dab in the middle and if you stay south of Apache, you're pretty much living in a nice neighborhood. Tempe is not so big and there are a lot of things out here. The only downside is that the houses are harder to find out here than in Phoenix or any other area.
Did you know that Tempe is the same size as San Francisco, Interesting just thought I would throw that in there. I live on Cooper and Warner in Gilbert and I think I am going to look around Gilbert and Pecos, they are doing alot over there. I have always seen the west side as old and city like and the east side as suburbia. Derek you are just going to come out here and see what you like because anyone that is on the west side will say west side and anyone on the east side will say east side.
the west side is all new...when i was in surprise..it was all new cuase there was nothing there before...same as queen creek. you can get good deals on either edge of the valley...if your going to move far out, live on the side closer to work..
A few questions...
1. What is the retail sales tax?
2. What is the employment rate like?
3. How are the ppl there? Friendly, rude etc. esp. customer service oriented jobs
4. How is crime there? I saw a site that lists it just slightly above average crime rates.
Just a few for now.
