me vs the 350Z
Well, the racing gods were certainly against us tonight. First off there will be no video, since we never actually knew when we'd get the chance to race. It was quite a hectic night, and there was never a known time that we'd really get video.
By the time I reached gurnee it was snowing pretty hard, so we all decided to caravan up to Wisconsin where it wasn't snowing. There was a 350Z, 3 S2000's, 2 integras, a WRX, and a mercedes.
Anyways, cutting to the chase....
The first run we had was on the freeway from about 60mph. We started on 3 honks, and the 350Z pulled about a car length on me through 3rd. Into 4th he pulled another half car length, and as we got near 110mph I started to hold him off from gaining. However, we shut down due to traffic, with him having about a 1.5-2 car lead. This is about what I expected at these speeds since I lost to the only other 350Z I've ever raced from a roll.
We then continued north and went all the way to milwaukee. (quite a drive for the chicago guys) Once on hwy 100, we went to another spot to race on an on ramp, but some guy went off the road and pulled up next to us in his big ol pathfinder to yell at us and say we were bad.
So we did another freeway run, this one from about 50mph. I started in 2nd, and pulled ever slightly for 2nd gear, but once again into 3rd he pulled a car on me... then again another half or so in 4th, and again shut down at 110ish.
The last race I had with the 350Z was from a stop. I got him off the launch, and continued to pull in 1st, and maybe a little more in 2nd, but we shut down at 60mph since it cut down to 1 lane. I know that traction was an issue, but hey, it was for me too. So I won the race from a stop to 60mph. lol
My belief is this.... from a roll above 60mph, the S2k will lose. 1.5-2 cars from 60-115 is a convincing win, and the 350Z has a better top end. Maybe a driver can make a difference, like if the 350Z guy can't shift, the S2k can win. But the 350Z has an advantage on the top end, no doubt about it.
From a stop however, I think the Z's short gearing seems to hurt it against the S2k. While the Z has to shift fairly early, the S2k winds out 1st and 2nd gear a little better. If both driver's can launch, I think you'll see the S2k pull in 1st, and a little in 2nd... but then it's the Z's turn and it takes 3rd and 4th gear. I can see how it is a very even race from a stop.
Sooooo..... from a stop... if you go a full 1/4 mile, I say driver's race. From a stop to only 60 or 70 (typical street light race), it's gonna be S2k's advantage. Any roll above 50mph or so, and the Z will take the win. This is if the Z is manual.... auto is going to make the Z slower.
yes I can drive, and yes chicagoEZ can drive. Both cars are well broken in. It was a blast, and I look forward to more matches with 350Z when we can take it to GLD and cruise on down to chicago.
On another note, the best story of the night came later on. While me and the 350Z and the WRX were lined up at a light, we decided not to run. The WRX launched, however, and geezus is that thing fast. I don't remember what's he has done (he can post it later) But dear God I've never seen such a hole shot in my life. I mean me and chicagoEZ rolled out and in a split second the WRX was 10 lengths ahead.
He was followed by a quick and modded GSX. I got next to the GSX after that and ran him. He pulled for a little, but then my top end took over and I passed him for a little edge and took the win when shutting down at 110mph. Immediately after, the WRX ran the eclipse and beat him quite handily. As that race finished, I see flashing lights behind me. COP!!
Here is the scenario. An S2000 and an eclipse just raced, followed by the eclipse and a WRX. Following us is a 350Z, a mustang GT, and an integra. Of all this... the cop zooms in.... has his sights set. And pulls over the ONE CAR NOT RACING... the integra. WTF is that? Yup, our poor friend in the integra gets pulled over his first time to milwaukee. Luckily the cop let him go. He pulled him over for loud exhaust, and he thought that he was squealing his tires. "gee, uh no officer, that would be the WRX, S2000, and eclipse that were doing 100mph right in front of me". cops can really be dumb.
We all got to sit back and chat for a while, shoot some pool, and have a drink or two, so it was still a good night.

good story!
i never knew the S200 can keep up with the 350Z that close! cosidering the 350Z has a bit more power and a lot more torque! just invest on a Comptech SuperCharger and you'll take him no problem!
you have to remember... the WRX is all wheel drive, so it's a bullit when it takes off!
but it's a good story!

great story, just wanted to ask you a question ...Have you raced any NEW Eclipse's and if so how badly did you beat them - I'm up in Canada and its winter here (as well a there by the sounds of it) so I haven't had a chance to test the new car out - you mentioned an eclipse in your story but I'm gonna guess it was al ate 90's version - just wondering how they fair or what a stock 03 GT would do in the 1/4 mile ....Thanks

I ran a stock one at GLD once. He ran a 15.34 to my 14.11. So it's not exactly a close race. But I think the new eclipses are around a low 15 second car. Don't know if anyone has broken 14's with a stock one or not.

I guess its a good thing i didnt get out then, all that snow and crap. Would have been such a long drive there and back. It was horrible out here all day and i changed my mind about making it out because i didnt want to get stuck in bad weather 2 hours from home. I HATE chicago winters! I still want to see how much "slower" the auto Z is compared to the manual, but i have a feeling that its still going to be close. Ive been doing time tests with my digital lap counter thing, and im around the high 5's to 60. and from what i can feel the car doesnt lag to the quarter mile. I still onyl have about 700 miles and most guys seem to be getting better performance around 2k. So hopefully i will treat the engine well a little more and get some good results from it.
Great story thou, really makes me wish i hadnt missed it. How much work has that WRX had done to it to be pulling like that? Sounds like even you were impressed by it, and ive never had any reason to be impressed with one so far.
Next time we make up one of these meet things, lets try to do it when the ground is dry?????

You know what's even more crazy, is when he did that launch off the stoplight, he had like 4 people total in his car... one of which was 300lbs. lol. And he STILL got like 10 car lengths instantly. It's the sickest WRX I've ever seen in person. And it just SOUNDS like a monster. Not a noise I wanna hear when I'm on the line against another car.
I'm going to race him next time I see him, just so I can get it on video. It's truely awesome.

Try posting that on neweclipse.org and they'd laugh your friend off the board. Don't listen to everything people tell you..... particularly something so far fetched... ya know?
