power shift

a friend of mine encourages me to power shift when racing, i keep teling him that will wear out the car faster and such but he argues that every now and again when im in a race it doesnt really matter. anyone know if powershifting on our cars will wear it out faster or is that just a myth

What is powershifting? I've heard of speed shifting where you dont use the clutch(very bad)... but never heard of powershifting.

Power shifting is shifting using the clutch, but NOT letting out the gas. (there may be a variation where you also DONT use the clutch, you just jam the gear)

Either method is BAD for the car, and will wear it down. Stop doing it.

As for speed shifting, that's just shifting as quickly as you possibly can, but using the proper heel/toe technique and clutch/gas. Speed shifting is shifting, but as fast as you can do it!

Speed shift, and save the wear and tear on your car.

If POWERSHITTING was good and made the car faster, why don't NASCAR drivers do it? THEY DON'T. Use the clutch, or learn to shift faster. Powershifting is for the stupid/lazy.

Shifting real fast will wear out the tranny anyway. Our synchros aren't that great. Shifting with the gas floored works for some cars and some not. In my 5.0 I had, keeping it floored I ran better quarter times every time. In my civic, I don't. You just have to find out which makes you quicker. I wouldn't reccomend it though. Especiallly with our weak trannys.

remind him again of how he said its fine to do when he is shifting normally and grinding it into gear with the fux0r3d synchros.

as far as i know NASCAR cars usy sequential shifters. I.E. clutchless shifting... its only used for dead stop starts.

Uh, ya know, if you just shift really fast, you can semi-power shift (unless you're shifting without the clutch... don't do that. It's goodbye clutch). When you drive up to 7k rpm and shift, you'll have enough rpms left when you hit second to pull you. If you want to keep the gas down, then make sure you shift quickly. But the better way is to let off the gas slightly so that the rpm are only slightly higher than what it should be in the next gear. Then, shift and pop the clutch. That way you won't have that much strain on the clutch and you still get the power transfer.

what dont you understand about this, its bad for the SYNCHROS. Who ever mentioned anything about a clutch which you can replace for 300 dollars?

joeB16: when you watch those jap guys in those vids where they got a little window of their feet positioning and when they shift, they always use the clutch.. that was my point. (professional race car drivers don't power ****)

shifting without the clutch is whab status and shifting with the clutch is "O.G." status my .02 cuz your just ending up buying a new tranny or clutch whitchever ones wears out first, prolly the tranny cuz you not using the clutch.

I have an Idea... why not go to a race school and learn how to double clutch like you should be doing if you are racing... which you shouldn't be racing on the street anyways. Then find out when there is a local track night in your area and practice your technique.
Be careful out there guys... and keep the shiny side up!

uhhh. there is no reason to double clutch in our cars. they have synchros. double clutching only slows you down.

were you kidding or serious???

To be honest with you.... no i wasn't kidding. Most manual transmissions have synchros... as a matter of fact you would be hard pressed to find one that doesn't.
As for double clutching slowing you down... not if you learn how to do it properly and as I said... take time to practice your technique. You can still grind gears with a synchronous gear transmission... double clutching helps to releave the stress and ensure that you don't grind your gears into a nice metallic paste.
Later!

Well... Everyone has thier own style I guess. I just wanna see the looks on your faces when honda gives you a bill for the tranny they had to replace because you toasted it. Oh.... and take from me... I am a mechanic at Ford... they do know the difference between normal failure and gears ground into a pulp.

Powershifting will definitely mess up your tranny. My case bearings went out in my 99 DX after only 40,000 miles. The cause was a damaged 2nd and 4th gear shift fork. The service guy said it was from "powershifting", even though I had never powershifted ever in that car. I always use the clutch. I did, however, shift hard and fast, and that probably had the same effect.

The bottom line is, if you abuse it, it will crap out on you. Powershifting/speed shifting is abuse on our cars.
