I was on my way to work tonight, doing about 75mph (speed limit is 65). I came upon a car in the right lane that was going a bit slower, so I decided to move over and go around him in the left lane. As I got closer I saw it was a new Pontiac GTP (the supercharged kind).

I wasn't thinking anything of it, and started to go by. My exit was coming up, so I figured I'd move into the right lane and exit, but this guy had another idea. Instead, as soon as I started to pass, he sped up and matched my speed. I slowed down a bit, and so did he. So I sped up a bit to get ahead, and as I was nearing 80mph I heard him floor it. Somewhat anticipating this, I slammed it into 3rd gear, and wound out 4th as well. When I shut down at about 115mph, I had about 8-10 car lengths on the guy.

I moved over into my lane, slowed back down to the speed limit, and he kept his distance.

4 cylinder > supercharged 6 cylinder. woot

oh he was trying alright. that's about on par with races i'd had before with GTP's. for 260hp, they are bloated, and the auto tranny just makes it worse.

An S2000 from a roll is quite different than an RX 8 from a roll. i dont know what kind of top end you have, but the RX8 being a mid 14 second car, is right along the lines of the GTP at about a 14.7 second car. take away the RWD advantage by going from a roll and a GTP should stick pretty close to you, though i'd still think you'd pull.

Well, to be honest I test drove an S2K the same night I bought my 8, and I'll tell you the powerband on the two cars are almost identical. The S2K gets the edge though, due to weight advantage obviously.

I think the highway is where these cars shine due to top end. My friend has a z28 camaro with over over 350 whp that just destroys me from a dig. But I surprised him when we got on the freeway ramp, he said he was flooring third gear, and I walked by him. funny thing was, I didn't realize he was flooring it. I was still in second orbitting 9K RPM, where he was probably not in his powerband yet...his car still destroys mine in a straight line though.

So yeah, the S2K and RX-8 are uncannily similar in powerband and gearing. I think it would be interesting if I got to run against one. My gf is planning on getting th '05 this may. I want her to get the moonrock silver color. Haha, and I'm gonna drive it all the damn time.

In stock form, they aren't much to write home about, being that they are very heavy and FWD, among other things. However, they can get into the 13's with just a few mods. Think '03 Cobra, just to a MUCH lesser degree. Personally, I don't like GTP's at all for several reasons, but they can be quick.

sometimes you have cool races, but honestly why do you waste your time on most of these lame-*** ones, your gonna get your *** thrown in jail for a silly little race with a truck or some econo-box, to me it isnt worth it...
