Clutchless Transmission
I heard this this term on TV while this drag racing thing was going on:
Clutchless transmission
What is it?
How does it work?

If it's a semi automatic then it's like having a manual transmission without the clutch pedal. You can just upshift & downshift without hitting the extra clutch pedal. I guess it's like playing a video game. Paddle shifting means you upshift & downshift by flicking the two paddles on either side of the steering wheel. It's pretty much the same like a regular semi automatic.

Nope I'm talkingt about a clutchless tranny, they use it in Drag racing. Thats all Iknow about it. Paddle-shift is still manual and it has a clutch. Auto also has a clutch.

I think he might be also thinking of those funky transmissions they use in drag racing that there is no actual shift gates. Instead of having to shift all around a gate in the center console, there's a seperate shifter for each gear. So, as you need to shift gears, you yank on the shifter and it upshift. So you'd have 3 or 4 different shifters in the cabin. Is that making sense? I'll hunt for a picture.
*edit* Maybe something like this?

You're not maybe referring to CVTs are you? I haven't heard much of anyone using those for drag racing, but I don't imagine they'd be too bad as long as you beefed up the pulleys/internals a bit.

the top fuel pro dragsters use a clutchless transmission, cuz a clutch would just melt instantly with 7000+ hp those guys put out... hmm ill try to find a link
whoops they use clutches, i was thinking of a centrifugal(?) clutch like on go-karts and such haha
still looking for a link for that tranny that uses the levers for each gears like in funny cars

my friend claims to have this auto-clutch thing for his cougar. im not too sure what it is cause i have never driven it though. he has the 5-speed stick and claims when he runs the revs up all the way (doesnt have a redline on his stock tach???) that he can just shift and doesnt need to use the clutch. i saw him do this once. anyone know whats up with that?

sry to ***** the thread, ill edit my posts from now on
apparently its more than likely an automatic tranny, or it uses a clutch and its a manual tranny, or its like the f-1 racecars and uses paddle shift which uses, to make it short and sweet, an automatic clutch..
