Destroyed by a bug.

Last night I was driving minding my own business, then a bug pulls up next to me. I thought ok this should be easy. Well, I was dead wrong ! I mean this thing was fast probably could do something like 11s in the quarter mile. Anyways, I finally catch up and ask to see what he got under his hood (rear one that is). I'm thinking maybe a Porsche engine but it turns out that it is a modified vw engine. To make a long story short I totally respect bugs now and will think twice before I mess with one of those things.

Has anyone else encounter one with these Cal-Look bugs (I think that is what he called it)?

That was my jaw when it pulled away.

Hmm...

Merged header, turbo muffler, msd ignition, and webers; were the only thing that gave it away. He said that it is stroked and bored to a 2 liter. I'm sure it had a racing cam and some other tricks too.

So this is the old school rear-engined air-cooled Beetle from the 60's-70's, right?

I'll bet that WAS a shock

so untrue, the oldschool bugs were the slowest creations ever ^ your friend may have had one that had a blown engine during its life or something and had a new one swapped in. Otherwise, stock oldschool bugs are wicked slow...

i have been into air cooled vw' a long time and yes stock, they are slow. ...
But built they are fast as fk . Super light car. Your typical stock vdub is a 1.6 liter engine and a puny 30mm single carb. something built up to a 2 liter is very fast. Not that reliable and may have overheating problems unless done right....but very fast. kind of like a stock d16 verses a h22 prelude motor. (just for comparisons sake) . imagine instead of boring out your honda motor 1mm you could just replace the whole cylinder with a larger bore by 8mm. add a cam longer stroked crank, some dual 48mm carbs (itbs) heads and your in buisness. ..just don't crash

My dad knew a guy that dropped a flat 6 from a Chevy Corvair in his oldschool bug. He said it was fast as hell but at 100+ it was all over the road, totally not made for those speeds.
