ur not an automatic, you dont needa shift down when ur bout to stop....
i find that downshifting helps slowdown the car a little on flat road. wouldn't it help take a little load off the brake pads?

Re: downshifting question

I downshift when I need to slow down a little bit, or very gradually, but if it's a hard stop, brakes ftw.

Re: downshifting question

downshifting to 2nd gear is good enough for me imo. you can even accerlerate from standstill in 2nd at a decent rate... unless you're going uphill.

how do you prevent the slight jerk when you downshift? i was only taught the very basics by my friend and was left to learn the rest alone.

Re: downshifting question

Rev match.

As you put in the clutch, blip the gas to make the revs jump 1-1.5K as you let out the clutch. As you do it right, the engine will match the gearbox and the jerk will be eliminated.

That's what causes that slight jerk, when the engine's not turning the right speed.

you let off the brake for a sec, blip the throttle, and brake again.

I'll try to make this more precise for you. This is probably different depending on the car, but as a reference, I drive a 2006 DX-G.

Let's say i'm in 5th going 100km/h and I wanna slow down. when I hit 90km/h, I downshift to 4th and bring my RPMS to about 3000RPM, because I know that going 90 in 4th gear will have my RPMS at 3000. Then once I hit 70km/h, I shift down to third, once again bringing my RPMS to 3000, for the same reason. I just memorized what speed i have to be going in which gear for my RPM's to be at 3000, just to make it easier to remember. and also let off the clutch slowly if you revved it a little too much or not enough, it will ease into the correct RPM more gently if you're not right on target.
I'm still kinda learning though, I haven't yet figured out at what point to shift down to second and first though. I often find it unnecessary though anyway, at this point I just go into neutral and just use the brakes.

Size 13 feet make heel-toe in our cars damn near impossible.
