Just out of sheer curiousity- why aren't you asking for your money back or for him to cover the cost of your rebuild?
Every mechanic I've ever gone to that has done a rebuild has been pretty good with saying that if anything goes wrong within x miles or x months, they'd fix it for free. I'd at least make him cover the cost of the replacement motor.

I noticed he didnt even take the head off or check the bottom. Everything was intact, but he told me it was the rod and piston. Looks like it was not touched, cuz motor was dirty prior to going to him and still looks the same.
So my friend is going to do it for me to see if the motor is really gone. I'm hoping its not, so I can rebuild it with my friend. Wish me Luck...

Re: D17 is dead for now..
well do you see a hole in the engine or something? cause usually if it looks physically okay on the outside, its usually something small inside like messed up valves or pistons.

ExTurbo6 I just pm'd you.
Gearbox I haven't gotten the chance to take a look. Where exactly should I look. I'll have some time on my hand tomorrow. My son comes first right now, so no time to work on the car yet. I think I should have him around when I do it, that way he'll want to learn more.
Thanks for all the info guys. I think this is the most I posted on one thread...lol

Re: D17 is dead for now..
well usually if a rod gets thrown out, there will be a hole in the block and lots of oil all over the place. if everything seems normal from the outside, maybe its not serious.

Re: D17 is dead for now..
Heres the latest update. I'm on very tight budget, and I have gotten a quote for $1,000 for another motor about 50k miles on it and labor. Doesn't sound like a bad deal. Thing is, I'm broke, I have half of that right now, but rent and other bills are do soon.
Im really tempted to sell the car as is, since I got an offer for $4000 already and just buying a used car for the time being.
I really don't have time or the money to worry about fixing the car. This is getting frustrated. I think I'll be able to save some money by selling the car as is and buying an older used hatch or teg. What are your opinions? I'm stuck and need to figure out which way to steer. Thanks guys

hmm idk, if the place does really good engine work, i say just fix the civic. but you dont want it to break again if they suck. but you could also find a decent used car for around 4k.

The warranty is 2 months on the motor, as he told me. The last guy that did it was 3 months and motor went bad at about 5-6 months. This is a tough one, guess I'm trying to lean more towards having the ability to save more money in the long run. So seems like either way will work.

Hey does anyone have a link, where theres a walk through on taking the head off of the car. Since the engine is messed up, figured I'd just take it a part and get familiar. Car is being kept, but no funds for new motor yet.

Re: D17 is dead for now..
um, theres like 50 pages about that lol. i would try and grab a service manual. theres no way to do it otherwise. too many torque specs and stuff to remove. and make sure someone can drive you around to get stuff when you get stuck or need parts. i recommend the honda manual, but maybe those cheap ones will work like chilton's.
Re: D17 is dead for now..
excuse me for jumping in here but ive been reading this whole thread and i kinda had the same situation, except that i dont have a kid. lol jk. anyway, my oil burned out and my motor started to knock, uhoh!!, so i found a motor for $500 bought a $20 haynes book and did it myself, it took me a month but only cuz i kept breaking sum things. i still have my old 04 d17 with the worn out crankshaft in my garage, its an eyesore my dad keeps on telling me to get rid of it. sooo... my point is im willing to sell u anything u need for cheap. or if u need the block ill sell for $175 idk how much the shipping will be tho. i didnt end up buying the crankshaft cuz it was more than a 50k mile motor, a new crank is 900. k well just contact me if you need anything at d568509084@yahoo.com later. ps. i saved like 500 on installing it myself. oh also, if the front lefo axle doesnt come out easily dont hit it with a hammer, use a gear puller. lol oops!
