Initial Mods
Initial Mods
Newbie here. Recently purchased an 01 Civic EX coupe. Initial mods: Injen SR intake, Tein SS Tech springs, & HKS catback exhaust. Stock engine supposedly is 127 HP. What sort of HP/performance am I looking at after these mods? Also, I think my VTEC is a VTEC-E. Not up on these things. I think I read some where that the VTEC-E is supposed to be more fuel efficient, therefore taking a hit on performance as opposed to the standard VTEC, is this correct? Do I need to eventually swap out my stock engine to get a significant performance boost? And if so, what am I looking at? When I get more money, what should be my next mods for performance that is? Turbo? Also, what's your opinion on 17" vs. 18" rims? Do these rims provide a performance advantage over the stock rims or is it basically a cosmetic thing? Thanks guys.
p.s. BTW, my steering wheel is approximately 15 degrees cocked to the right (from the horizontal) when my wheels are pointing straight. Not a functional problem, but it's annoying to look at. What's up with these Hondas. My first car was an 92 Integra and was straight but my mom's 93 Accord had this same problem. Is this due to incompetent folks who builds these here in the US? My integra was built in Japan. Both cars with steering issues were built here in the good ol USA. Is this something easy to adjust or is there a danger in screwing with the safety bag system, etc. Thanks in advance.

no such thing as a vtec-e
your 01 ex is just a regular vtec engine.
There's an i-vtec which the si uses, but not a vtec-e
You can play with your headers and intake manifold next. No need to do a motor swap unless your heart is set on it. There are members on this site as living proof. 300+hp out of mods to a D17 (our stock EX engine)
If you drive a 5-spd, you can buy parts for your transmission (short throw, flywheel, yada yada). But, unfortunately, autos are kinda boring in that field.
I don't know much about turbos besides the basic idea, so I'mma leave that subject alone.
17 vs. 18 is a never ending battle. I consider the diference purely cosmetic. Especially on our civics. I'm running 16's vs my stock 15" and you do feel a difference in handling. No real need for 18" except for looks and/or room for new rotors.
Welcome to the forums, and good luck with the new car.
They certianly are fun.

^^you're really misinformed. The vtec in the HX and EX is vtec-e, this has been covered 1232143513642 times. There is a site dedicated to explaining Honda's Vtec systems right here.
There are only a few roads you can go down with the d17, and they are all espensive. Turbo is your best bet, check with dezod.com. You could go with N2O, it's cheap and effective. Or you can spend an *** of money on N/A and still be less than 200whp.
Your best bet is ditching the d17 for a k20, preferbly the k20a2, k20z1, or the k20z3. These all come out of the RSX-S or the 06 SI.
With rim sizes, a wide 16 or 17 is best imo. 18's are just too heavy and have too much overall circumference to turn.

I havent really seen any good gains with I/H/E/P

Well, if your an auto those exact mods gave me 100whp
Vtec-e is economy, basically it engauges at like 2500 rpms and stays on, no noticable power jumps. The Si does carry I-Vtec, but it's system is still similar to ours, no 5000k engagement like everyone thinks.
The smaller your wheels are the faster you'll go in your car, and generally provide less weight, as you start plus sizing you'll gain some traction, but with the expensive of the wheels being harder to rotate.
Also your steering problem seems to be that your alinements off. Go get it redone.

Not hi-jacking a thread, but what in the hell does the vtec-e come on?
Which models and years?
I was thinking it as being something like the california emissions, then rethought my retardation.
Help me out.
