ncirom2003 - This was pretty much my first fiberglassing project. What helped me the most was just talking to audio/video shops and asking them how they make custom subwoofer boxes and how they mold in screens and such. And they half *** showed me how to make this piece. They said it would be pretty simple and it was not hard at all. The worst part is cutting out the metal piece behind the dash.

nitehawk - I am pretty sure large coffee cups will fit. I know I can fit a 20oz bottle in there as long as the faceplate is in stock position and not tilted up.

Im not really sure. Its really not that big of a piece your cutting out. You can leave the metal piece there, but your stereo will sticking out like 6 inches.

VERY nice job. If I tried a project like that, I'd probably end up with my face fiberglassed to the dash or something...

Thanks for the replies. I will possibly be selling these pieces. But preferebly localy because of the test fitting thats involved and the cutting behind the dash. But if anyone is interested, let me know and we'll see what we can work out.

yeah man, nice work.

elaborate more on the fiberglass work, im sure we'd all like to know more about it, looks pretty scarry to use. how did u get from that ugly red thing to that nice primer looking one? ive got a carputer in the works too. ive got eveything i need- ill be using a 7" widescreen touchscreen lilliput display someday.

im just really worried about signal noise from my dc->ac inverter.

you should look into getting an opus power supply, its a little more pricey, but its more efficient since its a dc-dc convertor. Plus, its a shutdown controller and will keep your computer powered up during crank.

I know I said the DIY for the Carputer would be up this week. But I have ran into a few snags. But it will be up soon. Hopefully by next week.

Well after you stretch the fabric tightly over the piece (you can use grill cloth or t-shirt material, basically anything that stretches) You brush Fiberglass resin onto it. A few layers is fine. And for added strength you can put down the fiberglass matte, but its not necessary for this project. Then after a few layers of fiberglass resin, You sand it down until its pretty smooth and you have the shape you want. Then you put down a layer of fiberglass bondo to fill the gaps. Once its smooth again, spray it with primer. If you still see imperfections then fill it with another layer of fiberglass bondo. Dont worry it doesnt have to be perfect because the final spray will be with truck bed liner and that will cover the imperfections, but you want to have the basic shape and pretty smooth. But remember that you want to have a few layers of both, fiberglass resin and fiberglass bondo to give it the strength it needs. HTH
