Problem with KONI's

I have had my civic for 2 years and I have had my suspension setup for a year now and I am just now having a very anoying problem.

I am running ground control coil overs and koni yellows

This first happened on the highway. I hit a bump and felt the rear end sag. I pulled over had the car towed and found out that the c-ring that holds the lower spring perch on had bent and broken. I called koni and got a new c-ring and installed it just as I had before. And after a short time the same thing happened again. What is causing this.

It seems to me that the little c-ring is not adequate to take the loads that the spring perch sees. It apears to definately be the week link.

Has anyone else had this problem. What was your solution (with details)? Did I do part of the instalation wrong. Please help

p.s. I searched and found a thread that mententioned a problem like this but it was never resolved.

Try searching around...I believe this is a common problem/complaint about Konis but I dont want to say for sure because I dont have them.

Yea, I bought some and then sold them because I didn't believe in the strength of that c-ring. I posted pics and pointed this out in a thread months ago.

I wouldn't trust that c-ring for nothing.

Sounds like the ring got weak over time and just failed to support the weight. I think someone said they had their clips welded on to fix this problem? Not sure..

get the gc/koni adapter. that should help beef up the perch, if not ya you can always try and weld it on.

We encountered the same problem that you had....

Koni sent us a replacement C-ring.....I don't think it will hold...

What setting are on your rears?

i've had the same problem with my koni's using progress springs...

the problem is simple, our cars are too low...

the spring perch will last a lifetime with the stock height/weight springs...

there is a phenomenon called "coil bind" which is where the spring gets so loaded that all the coils are touching... at this point it's no longer a spring, but a tube of metal

if the spring bottoms out before the shock, then everytime you bottom the car out it's like taking a hammer to that "tube of metal" (that should be a spring) sitting on the spring perch...

the solution(s) to your problem are simple, albeit you won't want to hear them...

a: get some springs with a 1 (or so) inch drop for the rear...

or

b: weld that sh_t

although i *think* there is one other way... if someone could make a solid ring that fit on the tube of the shock that was held up by the c-clip and was about 1/2inch think and held the perch i think this would stop the perch from bending enough to eff with the c-clip

Yeah...I got my Koni's like a year ago...and well my c-ring....broke...cisco-88 is the witness to that...well luckly the perch got stuck in the groove where the c-ring sits...cuz ****..my car would have droped to the ground....all in all...the c-ring that koni gave for a replacement is great....seems to be a better material....

Also..my ground controls somewhat bent...ugh..soo not cool....

is koni the only shock that this will happen to?

coil-bind really sucks. I just have goldline springs and stock shocks. I was putting on all my swaybar/tiebar/strutbars this weekend, and I could tell that all the coils at the bottom touch everytime I hit a bump. Riding on stock shocks is OK, but not if you have an 01/02...honda started carrying a different manufacturer for struts because they needed to get so many replaced! man, that sucks.

anyways, it wore the paint off the springs, and started to rust out the freakin springs. man, I'm pissed.

so, I ordered the Tein SS system

Hmmm...

I have had my Koni Yellows on my rear suspension for over a year as well. However I have run into no problems. Would it maybe have to do with how low the car is? I have 2.0" drop on the front and 1.8" drop on the rear of my car and even lower in the past (changed springs). I have also hit some nasty bumps. ANyone have more input?

I've got koni yellows on front and rear with skunk2 coilovers. I used the skunk2 adapter ring and haven't had any problems. I have the car lowered about 2.5" all around.
