For a smooth ride I would cut them about an 1" all around. The tricky part with the fronts is getting them to stay up on the strut. I took some rubber hose and wedged it in between the strut and dust cover then zip tied them around.
The answer to your question will be found with whatever type of springs you have. Some recommend it, some don't. I know people who have 18's with a 2.25 inch drop that haven't cut there's and have no problems. I lowered mine 1.75 and I did trim them. I would do whatever the spring calls for though.
I trimmed my bump stops per instructions when installing ProKit and Koni's. Otherwise the car might be hitting the stops too much and not allow full spring and shock travel. I agree though, you should go with the spring company's reccomendations.

cutting bumpstops doesnt really effect ride quality...
ya just cut it to whatever they recommend i think it was like 1" in the rear none in the front...
