Moog or another brand as a good replacement part

Hi,

I have an Honda Civic EX 2002. Basically, I want to know about the quality of Moog sway bar links and end tie rods.

Is Moog a good replacement for an OEM part? I like to be an smart buyer and sometimes it is common to feel the Honda OEM parts don't really worth that much, specially, when I can get for example KYB or Monroe front strut mounts for half the price of OEMs having the same or better quality.

If someone has experience with Moog parts please share your thoughts, can I expect at least the same quality or it is better to go OEM.

On the other hand, if someone wants to recommend another brand please go ahead.

Thanks everybody and have a good one.

Is Moog a good replacement for an OEM part?
Not for a Honda.
It might be a lot better than most Chrysler factory front end parts , not Hondas.

Note the various recalls on Chrysler suspension parts.

JMHO. YMMV.

I was planning on getting a pair of Moogs myself once my rear sway comes in. ezone's comment was the first BAD thing I've heard about them!

Re: Moog or another brand as a good replacement part

It's been my (general) experience that they don't last as long as OE, and require more work to do so.
If you can keep pumping grease into them every 3k they will probably last ok, but miss greasing them a couple times and they wear fast.
(I haven't cut apart one of their swaybar links, but the tie rod ends and ball joints are generally still constructed as metal on metal and require frequent greasing.)

MOOG used to be a supplier of reliable quality suspension parts.
Their quality seems to have gone downhill over the last several years IMO.
There can be supply chain problems, counterfeit parts problems and reboxed parts problems.

Be careful, what you actually get may not be what you thought.

Google 'moog poor quality' and similar keywords.

Quote from another forum:
I've since found out that any Moog part with an "RK" prefix is not actually made by Moog, but is made for them and considered a "mid-grade" part. I declined the replacements - told them I wasn't using these again.

ezone, so you're saying this really is inferior to OEM? You're definitely the expert!

Pic from the link:

Reboxed OEM? Counterfeit of the OEM, made in China??
That LOOKS like an original type swaybar link, save for the nyloc nuts and silvery color (if that's a silvery color).

The OE part number on the site came up as a left rear link for 01-05 Civic.

The description doesn't match the MOOG part that gearbox had in the images earlier, nor does it match the part in the pic:

Socket-style sway bar links are made with durable powdered-metal bearings that can withstand much greater loads without deforming like plastic bearings do. Moog powdered-metal “gusher" bearings keep lubrication at the bearing surfaces, enhancing durability and service life.

Those 4 little white colored pegs sticking out of each 'cup' area is part of the nylon liner (friction surface) in the stock unit.

Wrench flats at the base of the stud allow for the use of sockets for easy installation.

Do you see any of those wrench flats on the wide part of the stud? I sure don't. Those look quite round to me.

And where are the grease zerts?

You're definitely the expert!
Not really. I just like to disagree with everyone for no apparent reason..

Re: Moog or another brand as a good replacement part

Let me help you out a little bit more.

I went to the Federal-Mogul (MOOG) site and looked up the same car, same part.

Check my link here: http://www.fme-cat.com/overlays/part-detail.aspx?brand=MC&PartNumber=K90453&pt=Stabiliz er%20Bar%20Link%20Kit%20&lu=2003%20HONDA%20CIVIC&v in=

*ahem* This looks more like the description given by rockauto.

How do ya like me now?

Re: Moog or another brand as a good replacement part

Ezone,

Definitely you're the man....! There are certain brands that I really trust such as KYB but in this case this is the first time that I consider to use an aftermarket sway bar link and tie rod so it is good to ask for some advice.

On the other hand, it is common to hear histories about OEM parts that are actually made in China and the only difference is just a nice box wich says "Honda", "Toyota"... I like to pay for quality not only for brand,

Thanks,

I'm all for saving a few bucks if I'll be just as happy with the OE part. I'm just not a big fan of doing the same work twice if I can do it right the first time!

I personally have never seen a problem with factory parts that come on the truck from Honda to our parts department.
No counterfeits, no reboxing of inferior parts--- from Hondas warehouses AFAIK.

(MIS-packaged parts, maybe...but you'll have that on occasion with any supplier.)

Do we have factory original parts that go **** up way too early as a rule? What % of those parts are made in China? IDK.

----------------------------

Can I point and giggle at Chrysler and their recalls for front suspension ball joints and tie rod ends? Apparently they were made of cheese or something.
I mean, seriously... they have had like 100+ years to figure out how to build suspension parts and still can't make them last even ~10k?

Um, too late. Your first link was quite real, so RockAuto was just proven deceitful in my mind.

How much $ for those parts, anyway?

I'm all for saving a few bucks if I'll be just as happy with the OE part. I'm just not a big fan of doing the same work twice if I can do it right the first time!
Reminds me of a little adage posted on a wall at a previous job:

Why is there never enough time to do it right the first time, but plenty of time to do it over?

The first one I linked was $14.26, the second was $21.79. I agree, mismatching the pictures/parts is sketchy as all hell.

so, potentially the bad reviews are from the parts that are not "sturdy" looking, maybe.

I was reading more bad stuff about their ball joints than their links. Once again, if my OEM links will suit me just fine then I'll keep them.

I never liked Rock Auto. They seem to have sketchy info!

Make your own end links with heim joints. Cost $35 and as long as they don't rust out they are strong.

Or not from true Moog parts. Parts that claim to be Moog but are fakes.
