Shaking steering wheel.
Shaking steering wheel.
Hello everyone! I've got a problem with my 02 civic em2. It starts to shake from left to right at pretty much any speed but its more noticeable on straight roads. Along with the shame I also hear some rattling that matches with the shaking and seems to be coming from the front passenger side. I've replaced my completely worn bushings with polyurethane replacements and also replaced the ball joints. This did help out A LOT but now it's this shaking that won't go away. I've looked at the sway bar stabilizers and they don't look in great condition but seem okay. Got an alignment after replacing everything. Do any of you guys have any other suggestions? Here is a vid its more noticeable half way through: [autostream]http://autostream.com/ibcivicforums/?page_type=firebirdplayerthumbnail&framepage=1410& transactionid=1373918683-173604726&posted_by=_www.civicforums.com&youtube_v ideo_id=OrzSTkrLqNA[/autostream]
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Shaking steering wheel.
Hmm... you seem to have confirmed that the ball joints, bushings, or lack of an alignment weren't the problem. Those are the first things I would've pointed out.
Also check to see that your lug nuts are all tight, your wheels are properly balanced, the brake rotors aren't warped, and the tierod ends are secure. I'm not entirely sure that the sway bar could cause that if it were loose.
A lot of things can cause the wheel to shake, so it requires a thurough check of everything in the front end unfortunately
I can't quite make out the problem from the video, but it seems to be a bit disturbing so I hope you find an answer soon.

Re: Shaking steering wheel.
I've checked out the tie rod ends and from the engine compartment and they also seemed fine but that's the only other thing I've found searching the forums. Ill still place the order for them and replace them as well. They also balanced my tires since I had to move my back tires to the front. Thanks for the suggestions guys I gotta get this fixed before the fall semester starts since I commute! Ill probably have to get another alignment again if I replace them, right?

Re: Shaking steering wheel.
Does the shake happen on really smooth roads too?
If your roads are a bit rough, you may have some bump-steer problems in the suspension which is kind of a complex issue.
If you experience it on really smooth roads, then you can disregard that and bet that it's something in the front hub & steering assembly.

Re: Shaking steering wheel.
Yep. The video I took was partly on a smooth road more towards the end of the video but the shaking still happened. Feels like a console remote that has vibrate on blast! Hmmm should I just buy the tie rod ends or the inner rod as well? When I was ordering both ends seem to have a rubber grommet or it might be a rubber boot as well.
Re: Shaking steering wheel.
what kind of tires do u have? alot of cheaper tires will seperate internally and cause this. Try rotating front to rear see if there is any change at all (it may be a minor change if running same on rear but any change at all will be tires)
Re: Shaking steering wheel.
If you're running aftermarket rims, check to see if you have any space between the rim and the hub. you want to be hubcentric not lugcentric. If they are aftermarket and you have a gap, just buy some cheap hub centering rings.
