Coil overs for 04 civic EX
Coil overs for 04 civic EX
Hey everyone, I want to lower my 04 ex, but I'm having trouble deciding what brand to go with. I've heard skunk2's are nice, but I've also heard that they don't work well with my model. Can anyone help me out with what type of coil overs would work well with my car?
Thanks!!
Thanks!!
Re: Coil overs for 04 civic EX
I'm sorry, maybe I'm a little confused. I thought coilovers referred to the whole coilover system with new shocks as well. and I thought coilover sleeves referred to the adjustable springs that would be used with your stock shocks or whatever shocks are already on your car

Re: Coil overs for 04 civic EX
you are correct? same as what the others said? not sure what you are confused about?
"New shocks" will have the threads on them, so it's an integral part of the kit, BTW.
also, stock shocks will not live long on stiffer springs that comes with the sleeves. and no, you can't use stock springs on the sleeves, before you ask

I guess lowlife9's last post is what made me feel like I was confused or misinformed. it still does honestly. lol. and ohh okay, i didn't realize that the "new shocks" would come with threads. I thought "coilover sleeves" just fit over any other kind of shocks. so basically if I want coilovers, that means I'm getting basically a whole new suspension? is that right? and I wasn't going to ask that but thanks lol
Re: Coil overs for 04 civic EX
I know this is a slight thread revival, but it's better than starting a new thread.
Intro:
I have an 04 EM2 EX, currently the only modification is a stereo (Headunit), and I've recently started looking at aftermarket rims. Whatever choice I make, I want the diameter of the tire to be stock. I've looked around, and I found that aftermarket rims look a little silly if you don't drop the car. So, I did my research and I've found that the optimal choice if you want to retain ride quality is a set of coilovers. I'm thinking of only dropping it ~1.5", but I like the ability to adjust the ride height with coilovers.
What I'd like to do:
Purchase Tein Street Basis coilovers first and foremost, while keeping the stock rims. From there, I'll decide whether or not I want to get rims, but I'll likely wait until I need new tires anyway.
Here's where it's not so clear to me, though: All I should need after a drop is a rear camber kit and an alignment, correct? After that, I should be able to drive it however I want and not have to worry about much except taking dips/bumps more strategically and a small bit of maintenance to the coilovers during the winter, right?
I'd appreciate any help I can get.
Just a note, it might be a while before I dump all of this money into my car, since I'm a senior in high school at this point, and will have to thoroughly think through every dollar I spend to make sure I have enough left over for college after all is said and done.
So, my tab is looking like:
$194.92 - Skunk2 Rear Camber Kit
$826.49 - Tein Street Basis Coilovers
$95 - All4 Wheel Alignment (Don't know how much it'll actually cost - It may be free depending on a few factors.)
Total: ~$1,116.41.
Anything I missed?
Any help is greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

Everything sounds like you've done your research stewartfan, everything you said in your post is correct. There's only one major issue, don't get the skunk2 camber kit. Not only are skunk2 products nicknamed junk2 for the terrible quality, but you can get a camber kit that will work just as well for half the price. Megan camber kits are a good option for a nearly stock car and are aluminium so you never need to worry about rust.

the thing about the tien basis is there new so nobody knows if there reliable considering there based on the tien basics which are known to blow easily when maxed out. i would reconsider for progress though there slightly mor expensive but there well known for there reliability.

Re: Coil overs for 04 civic EX
I was waiting for you to say that lowlife, if your going to drop tein basics below 2.5 inches consistently progress would probably be a better choice.
stewartfan, the irony is that the $120 megan camber kit is better quality than the $200 skunk2 model. Skunk2 products are so over priced and poor quality is mind boggling that they're still in business.

Re: Coil overs for 04 civic EX
ok, but where can I find Progress? And I've read as long as you keep them cleaned and lubricated, there's no problem, true? Plus, I'm not planning on taking them past 1.75 at the lowest, probably keeping them at 1.5 and maybe even 1" at points. Does that mean I don't have anything to worry about?
Re: Coil overs for 04 civic EX
So these are a couple examples of what I'm thinking for the final product. I don't care what anyone has to say about the brand of rim, because I don't care. For one, it's not only my first car, but my first set of aftermarket rims, second, the less likely my car/rims is/are to be stolen, the happier I am. Lastly, I think they'll look good and that's all that matters. Now, with that said, how does this look? I'll probably have a factory spoiler put on at this point as well. I bought it back in Feb/Mar and haven't gotten it put on yet. haha

Re: Coil overs for 04 civic EX
Corsport carries progress, but their customer service sucks.
Try Honda-Tech, usually you can get awesome deals from the vendors on there.
keeping them clean and lubricated prevents the adjustment rings from seizing to the threads. My suggestion would be cleaning them with brake cleaner then coating the threads with moly grease if you lived in an area that snows.
Dampers blowing is an entirely separate issue that commonly occurs on Teins when they're completely bottomed out, If you don't go below 2 inches you shouldn't have any trouble and you can't go wrong with Tein quality.
Those Borbets are junk, if your not willing to spend at least $1600-2000 on volks/bbs/ccw you should stick with the stock wheels. Just kidding, those look good and suit the em2 well, there's really no need to spend serious cash on wheels when your just starting out.
I bought a new lip last March, maybe I'll get around to installing next spring. It's important to let your parts sit around for at least a year before installation

i bought my progress suspension from corsport among all of my suspension components and i never had issues with there customer service. but if you do decide on progress just know that there made to order not pulled off of a shelf so they take longer to get to your house and make sure you tell them your crash bolt size otherwise you mite have to widen them yourself.
