How to adjust coilover height (rear)

I understand that I can adjust the fronts while on the car because of the bearing in the upper strut mount. Which allows me to freely rotate the shock.

How do I adjust the rears while on the car, or do I need to take them out every time I need to make adjustments?

Bottom preach?

If the top hat is bolt down, and I undo the bottom ring, I can't rotate the shock.
Maybe I undo the very top nut which keeps the coilover attached to the top hat first.

...
very few coilovers require to turn the shock body. Can't remember the brand of the one that was like this...
you unlock the ring and turn the bottom perch, not the shock...

What do you rotate? the lamp bulb or the house when changing light bulbs?

PS: do you plan on rotating the fronts full turns with it connected to the steering rods and knuckle?

Re: How to adjust coilover height (rear)

When the rears are on the car, there is a bolt going through the bottom of the perch bushing.
Do I need to remove this bolt to rotate the perch?
Or, is there someway to adjust the height without needing to undo any hardware. That's all I'm asking. =]

Re: How to adjust coilover height (rear)

erm... the bolt you refer to is the locking device - you don't want the perches rotating on their own volition thus changing the ride height after you adjust them... being the reason they are locked... so unlock and turn the lower perches...

Re: How to adjust coilover height (rear)

heh, thanks for your help guys, sorry if I'm making it sound confusing..

I know how to adjust the coilovers, unlock the bottom ring and spin the lower perch. Just wondering if it could be done without having to uninstall them.

The fronts can be done while on the car I can tell. because of the steering bearing, which allows the assembly to rotate.

PS: They are not on the car yet, just a curious question in the meantime.

Re: How to adjust coilover height (rear)

like ui said, the top bearings does not affect adjusting height adjustment, unless you going to disconnect the brake lines, tie rods, knuckle to rotate the whole shock...
they are made to rotate the perches only, with them installed in the car, with the apparent exception of one maker that seems to require having them off the car to adjust - which is counterproductive for height adjustment and corner weightining (which is actually the best feature of the coilovers - not height adjustment, but that is for real man and racers, not for looks).
In other words, when you get the coilovers, look at them. right now, you are... just doing mental masturbation. Also, search a bit on how to adjust the height in coilovers - these are pretty basic questions easily found in the net, just waiting your fingertips to type the right words in the google search function....

Oh, yeh, Low_Tonez, AKA What_it_Do, I saw that in the other forum - they are the buddy clubs that need to take out to rotate the shocks. nthe reason you don't get a straight answer there is the same as here - too basic and erroneous assumption in a question
