Coilover's vs Springs/struts
Coilover's vs Springs/struts
Which is better for a daily driver? Coilovers or springs/struts. I'm looking for a sensable ride not a beast. I don't want something that's dumped or tucked or anything stupid like that. Just to lower the wheel gap. Would coilovers be good or is it going to make me feel every bump I hit? I have a set of Eibach sportlines right now, but I can get a set of coilovers for 400 bucks right now so i'm just trying to get an idea of which would be a better choice for me.

coilovers are much stiffer than springs/struts. If you want the looks and not the performance, go with springs. I regretted buying my coilovers till this day.

How often do ppl adjust coilovers seriously? To each their own coilovers are pimp but I wouldn't recommend them if you live in area with harsh roads.

Re: Coilover's vs Springs/struts
well go with a good full coilover like tein basic or SS. i just cant justify the cost of replacements. im really happy with tokico hp and eibach springs. you cant adjust it, but new shocks are relatively cheap and the ride is good. and dont forget to add up all the other required addons like camber kits, alignment, install, etc. it adds up fast.
Re: Coilover's vs Springs/struts
Well I looked at both options a few years ago. Full coilover setups are built to match...spring matches strut...they are made to work together. I have the B+G's and they ride awesome! They are self adjusting dampeners so that really helps. They stiffen up when you toss it around & soften up on the street. You also have limitless height adjustment & they really do make the civic feel like a different car.
Only drawl back is replacement. I have 60k on my coilovers & they are blown. I can buy new which is not cheap or have them rebuilt for 4-500 bucks.
If I had to do it all over again I would do Koni yellows w/ Ground control coilovers....You have the ability to replace parts independantly, height control, you can have the koni's matched to the GC's, & this combo works very well. Alot of the scca guys run these.
Coilovers handle awesome, cost alot, ride decent, & suck to replace
Strut/spring CAN handle awesome, cost is close to the fulls, ride decent to good, & can be replaced as needed
There's your two sides...choose wisely

Re: Coilover's vs Springs/struts
fosho put it nicely and i would have to agree with him... i got coilovers right now and they have lasted me a while now with no problems but if something goes it'll be a bitch to replace something. if that happens i may just sell the good ones to someone trying to look for replacements and go with the koni/gc combo... but who knows... i love my tein ss's!!!
Re: Coilover's vs Springs/struts
yea, i have the progress full coilover setup, and while the ride is MUCH stiffer than stock, i enjoy it. When i get into another vehicle it just doesn't respond anywhere close to the suspension on my civic.
but like everyone is saying if your looking for a comfortable ride with your car in mind for the long haul i would probably do the gc/koni combo, if your looking for something for 30-50k miles the coilovers might not be a bad idea.

Re: Coilover's vs Springs/struts
I've had megan coils over 6 months now and not one problem a nice ride even on our crappy roads here. I had springs before and it was way to bouncy and eventually the struts blew. Adjusting the height on them is very easy as well.
Re: Coilover's vs Springs/struts
I got tokico blues and those $50 Kazera Street sport springs that were on tirerack clearance....rides o so smooth and the drop is nice....shame on those who didnt know the H&R makes the kazera brand for tirerack....haha my win is your lost.....coilovers can be harsh on rough roads otherwise the adjustability is very good.

Re: Coilover's vs Springs/struts
Every weekend.
I used to drop it on the weekend, then put it back up for the weekly duties.
I don't do that anymore, just because my car is out of commission right now, but I love my coils.
Yes they are going to be stiffer. But I like that, coil overs aren't squishy like regular springs and struts.
If I can't feel my bones jarring, then it's too soft of a ride....
