Heating Springs?

I met this car guy today w/ a 91 hatch. I was talking to him about his car and how I like the drop and he said that he lowered it by having a shop heat the spring. He says the springs weren't stock but he wanted a little lower. Told me that the same shop could lower my front end for $60. Sounds pretty good but i've never heard of heating springs before. His ride was pretty stiff, no bumping or anything but i'm still not sure. Could there be any negative effects from heating springs? He told me they just heat them up and it start to drop and then when it's were you want it they let it cool down. Like I said I never heard of it either

For $60 you can buy a set of springs. Wait for about another month or two, it will start going lower and lower. That and they can come out uneven.

heating and cutting springs are the old school ways of lowering your car before they had manufacturers making parts. It is dangerous and not a good idea. .

Doesnt heat typically make things expand???.... or would they expand but then be able to go lower because everything isnt as densely packed together... yea that makes sense now that I think about it... barely

yes heat makes things expand, but it also softens the spring. so when you compress it, hold it, and let it cool, it will stay in that shape. they pretty much melt the spring til its soft enough to sag.

When you heat springs, you lose tensil strength which makes the spring drop. If not done correctly and evenly, it'll ride like ****. Not only that, if the spring no longer is expands correctly it can become unseated.
