A spring compressor is usually needed when you are taking off the top nut on the shock to take out the spring. It is used as a safety precaution because there is a lot of pressure on the top hat of the shock, and the spring could pop out once the nut is taken off. I've actually taken the shock/spring apart without a spring compressor (I'm sure other members have done the same), but it is definitely not recommended.
