I got so gradually used to my blown shocks that I didn't know when they were finally gone. But my buddy was driving behind me one day and told me when I went over a bump, my rear just kept bouncing up and down.
You can drive with blown shocks as long as you want, I don't think it'll wreck much else on the car...but safety-wise your handling is compromised if your shocks can't keep your wheels planted on the ground after a bump or dip. I would say I drove with blown rear shocks for about 8 months before I finally got my Hayames. My rears musta blown quick cause of my sub box in the back. It was to the point where the front was raised up cause the rear was sagging so bad. I have the stock rear shocks in my closet, I can move the rod up and down with just my hand....

If you keep bouncing after the bump, you have blown shocks. It usually take one to two movements for the shock to settle back to normal after a bump. When the shock is blown, the fluids inside the shock cannot get the shock to level off, or has a harder time, which means the shock is blown. Most of the time the shock is leaking its fluid when it is blown.
