NT-450: poor traction in rain?

I drove my car for the first time in the rain, and my brand new tires,
Nitto NT-450 215/45-17ZR were getting horrible traction! At every light on an incline, my tires would spin for about 2 seconds before I went anywhere. After about 15 min of driving it was normal again.

I feel I'm a pretty accomplished driver, I never spin the tires on take off unless I want to, and I was trying to be careful!

Were the tires just too cold? I have only put 350 miles on them, and they are mud and snow rated.

Thanks for any advice

High performance tires are usually not too good in rain, even if it says mud and snow. And ya, don't even think about using them in snow.

Ronin is right, but I would like to add that the Nitto 450's in particular are bad in wet weather. It's like sliding on your butt in an ice skating rink.

Performance tires are not meant for bad weather. Especially not Nitto. And like Ronin siad DO NOT use them in the snow.

My understanding is that any new tire takes about 200 miles to wear off the hard skin and 'break-in" before you'll get maximum stick.

Everything said so far is accurate...however, IMHO, the Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 tire is exceptional in the rain--trust me, I have these tires, in 205/40Zr17 size.

These are the first tires I have been completely satisfied with in both the wet and the dry...and they are under $100 each!!

I would have to agree. Kumho makes VERY good tires. For a performance tire they hold up well in the rain. Obviously nothing compared to a all weather tire but far better than Nitto. Nitto really doesn't make that great of tires in my opinion. They are over priced and over rated. Falken make some decent tires but not for street. Toyo and Yokahama are ok but for the money Kumho is better. I just wish you could get the Advan over here. Sorry got on a tangent.

I had Nitto NT450's on my truck. I hated them. They didn't last long either. In fact one of them blewout in about 2 weeks. I hear from others that the NT550's are more better.

A good tire to look into is the BR Goodrich Scorcher T/A's. You also get the bonus of colored treads. They have great traction for a performance tire in the rain. I live in Louisiana, so I drive in the rain alot. They also are very good in corners, allthough grip on takeoff is not as good as other tires.

BTW I've heard nothing but good about Kumho's although I've never owned any myself.
