Brake pedal is soft
Brake pedal is soft
First off I my wife began to complain about her brakes squealing so I decided to change her brake pads since I had them in the garage even though there was plenty of pad left (1/4") I put the new pads on that autozone gave me and went for the test drive... I could hardly roll down the driveway in neutral. Needless to say the wheels got hot fast!!! So I put the original pads back on just cleaned them up real good and now the squeak is gone. However now when driving, you have to push on the pedal for about 3 or so inches before any braking happens. So I blead the brakes on all 4 wheels but still the pedal has about 3 inches before any braking occurs. Any ideas on how to fix this? I did some research but only found 2 people bickering on how to change pads. On a side note I learned that I probably changed them incorrectly as I had my wife press all the way down to the floor on the pedal before I opened the bleed screw.

Re: Brake pedal is soft
Yeah, you probably sucked air back into the system by going to the floor with the pedal. Try it again with a piece of wood under there so you don't go all the way to the floor.
Re: Brake pedal is soft
or u have a seized caliper. i couldn't get out of drive by letting of the brake because they were applying brakes. they also started to smoke.

Re: Brake pedal is soft
I had a similar problem when my friend borrowed my car and drove with the handbrake on.
Somehow he either cause damage to the pads or sucked air into the system (I don't even understand how...) but my brakes were barely working when I started driving it again...

Re: Brake pedal is soft
Failsafe way to bleed brakes -> gravity bleed, drip drip drip and keeping the resovoir topped off. No chance of air getting in unless you let the resovoir get low during this process. Will take a while but what the hay
