Did front brakes last night and now have a problem
Did front brakes last night and now have a problem
Passenger side is fine. Wheel is nice and cool to the touch after braking. The driver's side I though I couldn't get the pin/bolt at the bottom that retains the caliper (has a rubber boot over it) to move in and out like the other 3. I even hammered on it! So I put the brakes back on which was a PITA with that pin not moving in. At any rate that side is getting hot. I don't know if the pin has something to do with it, caliper plunger is stuck or the brake hose collapsed on the inside and not letting fluid going backwards. I need to rip into it tonight to see iif I can troubleshoot the problem. Any suggestions for what order to check things? Any idea if this pin could be doing anything? It looks like it was stuck on the old brakes and when you put the bolt into it the pin is held out regardless so don't know.
wow exact same thing happened to me whn i worked on my dads car
he has an 06 though i got an 05 but prob should be same
wat had happen was that the bolt got rusted inside and all the grease dried up so it was stuck open i didnt kno wut was wrong till i tried to change n put new pads and the caliper wouldnt go bak on what i did was take off the caliper completely i brung it to my basement and clamped the pin on a vice n just kept turning n twisting to get the thing semiloose after a few mins of that i took an adjustable wrench and grabbed the bolt from the shaft n used a hammer to hit on the wrench to knock it loose...when i finally got it out the bolt was hella rusty n the inside was too so i got pipe cleaners n wire brush n cleaned inside n out n then regreased it...has been working fine ever since hope this helps

Re: Did front brakes last night and now have a problem
Does it need to move? It gets bolted up which pulls it back so didn't know. It was stuck with the old brakes in place but didn't heat up. I am taking the whole thing off tonight. Going to free it regardless.
Re: Did front brakes last night and now have a problem
yea it should move..ur talking about the peice that holds the caliper on the bracket right? yea there shoulde be two on the caliper surrounded by a boot they supposed to let the caliper move so when u press on the brakes it grips and when u let go the caliper goes back into rest position. it warped the rotor on my dads car n made a vibration at high speeds when we put the new pads on i tried to force it on and when he drove it, it made crazy vibrations at all speeds so idk my advice is free it..clean it and inside...and grease it tht should b a freely moving part
Re: Did front brakes last night and now have a problem
those pins should move with ease, i've had them stick on my car before too. no biggie, just get a new boot, some caliper pin grease, and you're good.
Re: Did front brakes last night and now have a problem
I'm a bit confused here of whats going on, are you talking about the sliders that the caliper attaches to the caliper bracket; do you have pictures? I do this for a living, so i believe i can help you out

i think they mean the caliper bolt and boot. its very common for it to seize up, esp on pontiacs lol. you can even get a new bolt from the auto store if you dont feel good reusing the bad one.

So will that sticking create my drag/heat problem?

Re: Did front brakes last night and now have a problem
yea thats the slide pin throw plenty of grease on it and put it back in the boot..normally whenever I do my brakes I pull it out just to make sure they are all greased up. You should use some brake grease so that way it wont dry out as fast due to all the heat.
Re: Did front brakes last night and now have a problem
this bolt being stuck caused my dads brake pads to stay down and not release wich made excess heat and caused the rotors to warp as soon as we took it out and greased it up worked good just make sure if it did rust up then clean it off with a wire brush and use pipe cleaner or something of that matter to clean inside the hole where the pin goes in and this should fix your problem
Re: Did front brakes last night and now have a problem
someone beat me to it, yeah thats the caliper slide, pull it out take the rubber boot off and grease the slide up nice, put boot back on and put back together, i use a diaeletric/brake lube grease at work it comes in a tube, but any labeled brake grease should work. just make sure you don't over tighten the bolts that go into the caliper slides because it will make it pita if you ever have to take it apart again.
Re: Did front brakes last night and now have a problem
Well what a job
Can't take the rubber boot off over the end. So I had to tear it off. Didn't matter because it would have had to be removed for the next step of using a torch. Still didn't come! So I finally used PB Blaster on it and used a pipe wrench while working it back and forth CW/CCW while spraying. I finally got it out after about 15 minutes of that. It was pretty pitted from rust but also they used a crappy grease IMO. I did order a new slide and boot but it won't be here until Friday. So I doctored up the one I took out with an emory board and pipe cleaner on the bracket with brake clean. Only way I could figure to get me through until then since I need the car was to grease the ever living **** out of it. That worked and it slid good after all the work. Put it all together and drove it hard for 10 miles on the brakes. Never heated up a bit! New parts arrive I will swap it all out and put good grease on there
