DIY Brake Pad Install

i'm planning on doing my 1st brake pad install on my '04 civic. i bought the OEM pads and a little tube of grease came with them. what/where do i use that. is it anti-squeak compound? also, a DIY sticky for pad/rotor replacement similar to the one for drums/shoes would be nice for newbs like myself. thanks.

Re: DIY Brake Pad Install

hey.

the grease is molycoat. You put it on the back of the brake pads where the caliper and cylinder will be contacting the brake pad. I usually jus brush it on the whole back of the brake pads. Ok, to start take of the wheel. You will see 2 -14mm (i think it a 14mm) bolts ON THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE CALIPER. loosen the bottom bolt and remove it. I would buy some high temp grease or something to rub on the bolt you removed (the slider) to protect it from seizing in the future. Then take the caliper and swing it up off of the pads and rotor. remove the pads and install in reverse order. Hopefully this works out for you...its only ONE bolt! Good luck and hope you get em..Should only take you 20mins, once your wheels are off. GOOD LUCK!

you forgot a few things

1. you have to reuse the little metal sheets that are "clipped" to the old brake pads
2. you have to get the caliper cylinder back in to do this

1. take off the brake fluid reservour lid under the hood
2. get some vice grips or something of the sort
3. gently push the cylinder all the way back in...it will resist but do it smoothly dont try to jam it in there by hitting it

also dont let the caliper hang from the line its on...instead, put it behind the rotor so it sits in that little nook and that way you are free to work
