What rotors to get???

I am planning on changing my front brake rotors soon and i have a question to anybody who changed theirs. Should i get Brembo blanks for around $40 each shipped or just stick to Auto Zone duralast $15 ones. I don't go to track, but brake more aggressively than average. And for the pads i just want something ceramic like ProStop from PepBoys for $39.99. Had them on my parent maxima and theirs quite and no dust. I you have any suggestions on pads/rotors combo, please help.

Re: What rotors to get???

just stick with the autozone/NAPA brand rotors. essentially its the same thing. even people who track their car regularly use generic rotors, its the pad that really matters when stopping.

if you're going to pay close to $40 for PepBoys brand pads, than i would suggest you to spend that money on Axxis or Hawk brake pads. its a better bang for your buck, imo.

Re: What rotors to get???

i agree with ^. a rotor is a rotor. i like using generics mainly bc theyre cheap. at 15-20 a pop, its no sweat changing them out after a summer of autox. The brembos may be a bit better quality, but considering you can get a set of cheapos for about the cost of getting "good" ones resurfaced, I think the money can be better spent elsewhere

as for pads, i also gata agree with^. if youre gonna drop 40 on pads, get something decent. I have used ebc in the past and i feel that they are over maketed/over priced, and underperformed. For street use, they were fine, but they tended to fade quite a bit on me on the track. I have used PFC in the past and was very satisfied. they were a bit on the dusty side, but i have dark colored wheels, so that was never really an issue for me. I am currently using Hawk HPS and again I am very satisfied. They seem to be a bit less dusty and i have never noticed any noise from them.

Re: What rotors to get???

I agree as well.... use junk rotors. I've found almost no difference between ther autozone junkers and brembos.
As far as pads... I've used most of the popular ones, Hawk HP+, Axxis Ultimates, etc... I'm rolling around with Cobalt GT Sports right now, they're by far the best stoppers, but they're expensive as all get out ($120 for ITR fitment) and they are LOUD.
I think the most streetable ones I've used are the Axxis pads.... gone through a couple sets of them without issue. They're dusty though.

Re: What rotors to get???

Thanks for all your feedback, i will get Autozone rotors, they come with a 2 year warranty. And for the pads i am thinking either Axxis Ultimate or Hawk. Do you know a place online where to get them.

Re: What rotors to get???

im a big fan of Raybestos brake pads, idk why ever since i was a teenager i thought asbestos was some pretty hot stuff and to have it used in brake pads well lol

But yea i have to agree, a rotor is a rotor. even though i have power slots i still use raybestos pads

robearracing has alright prices but you can barter with dezod

Be aware of EBAY cross-drilled and slotted rotors. Chances are, they are done by someone in their garage, they have no real geometry or testing as to if they will hold, who knows what kind of tolerances they are done with....Plus your decreasing too much of the active braking surface area. There is a reason why companies like Brembo and StopTech, who are some of the leading braking system manufacturers for OE & aftermarket do not offer drilled and slotted OE sized rotors.

i think what dezod was doing was just giving some handy advice because he doesnt want you to get screwed and post on the forum about how bad some rotors might be and how it cost you several hundred dollars to repair some part of your car because you went to ebay, whether they are good or not. IMO

i would stay away from those rotors, regardless of customer service. you have to realize that on a rotor as small as a civic, you dont have much braking surface to start with. by decreasing the amount of surface area, you are really gonna start to fade like crazy. also, those rotors are gonna eat your pads faster than you can eve imagine. The main reason that larger rotors are drilled is for a)weight reduction and b) cosmetics. there is no reason to run a drilled rotor with modern pads. years ago, pads supposedly caused a microscopic layer of gas bw the pad and rotor which could have decreasing your stopping ability.

never get these rotors. or anything with slotted or drilled.

why? simple: because you lose too much surface area.

if you get a BBK, it would be a different story, but you're not. same size rotor - area (from the slotted/drilled) = less braking power.

the first rotors that popped up on thta link were blanks. i said those were a good choice. i was referring to the the drilled and slotted for the "stay aways". the company doesnt matter to me. brembo, toys r us...i dont care. if they work like they should and are cheap, id get em.

Re: What rotors to get???

I was considering getting the slotted/drilled rotors, but only because I was running every page of a Haynes customization book. I have an '05 Civic LX, doubt that it'll see any real track time yet besides a few quarter mile runs in the future, but I drive aggressively and sometimes need to stop quickly. The better my brakes are, the more I'll be able to enjoy my driving. That and I have a certain passenger I like to just slow to about 10-15 mph and then hit the brakes on. Watching people fly forward is both funny and a great way to remind them about that seat belt!

That being said, if I don't need to replace my rotors, then they should be just fine the way they are and I don't need to mess with them, much less change them to slotted/drilled, right?

I started looking at the brake pads on Dezod's page and I like what I'm seeing price-wise. But here's where I could use some help. Given the info above, what would you guys recommend as far as better brake pads go? There's the Dezod X-Rated for 47, Hawk Performance for 53, and and Hawk HP Plus Race pads for 73. I notice a lot of people running Dezod, but I've heard a lot on here about Hawk and I'm also willing to go up to $73 if the performance difference is worth the price difference. I figure I've got about another 2-3 weeks on the brakes I'm running now anyways.

Oh, one more thing! When I do the brakes, what should I be looking for on the rotors to tell me if they're up for a change yet?

I know I ask a ton of questions, but you guys have been great and I appreciate all the help and input! I want to be able to work on my own baby when I can. Doesn't look flashy yet and it's prolly not as fast as most of the other cars on here, but it's mine!

Stock replacements will be MORE than you'll ever need

I've installed lots of Hawks and customers seem to like the brake responsiveness.

Measure their thickness, check for heat cracks, and black spots

Re: What rotors to get???

Thanks! I'll ordered them today. Though the shipping was a little steep for ground. I think I'll have to find another source for the Hawk pads, they can't be heavy enough for $15.
